Screaming 15-Year-Old Girl Pepper Sprayed

you with the face, why do you suppose cops have guns? Do they have guns so that at at the end of their shift and they’re feeling depressed they can shoot themselves?

Or could it be, they’re armed and under certain circumstances allowed to defend themselves and you know, shoot back?

Seriously, under what circumstances should cops have guns and be allowed to use them? I’m guessing to you, cops shouldn’t have guns because they’re so highly trained they’d never allow a situation to escalate to the point they’d have to use them.

Somehow.

Or, maybe you think cops can use their guns but only if someone else uses their gun first. In that case, should this cop have just bit the girl back?

No, I think what you want is for cops to just not do anything when they’re resisted and attacked. Best to err on the side of caution.

What a fucked up lawless world we’d quickly find ourselves living in.

So to sum up, you have no experience in physical altercations, yet seek to implement policy about them? Do you ask a virgin for sexual techniques or a lifelong New Yorker with no license for parallel parking tips?

It’s your inability to correctly model the situation from his point of view that’s causing what I consider weirdness on this issue.

Perhaps it is, but many laws do exactly that. Of course, you won’t find me defending the idea that something is right just because it’s legal.

Pets are property, people are people with rights, and lawyers to help exert them.

Whatever, dude. It’s you and other’s inability to argue competently that causes me to give up on this thread. Salut.

Why is this POV so alien? Because you’re staring right at it and missing it. The cop in the video was far better than Joe Schmoe at keeping his temper in check. He’s just not perfect at it, a standard you seem to have set for the police.

Exactly. The assumption is made that since this was a skinny teenager she posed no real threat to this cop. That is simply untrue. We’ve already had testimony about seemingly harmless individuals doing serious damage. The idea that the cop should be willing and eager to risk more harm to himself to spare this kid who just assaulted him goes against police training. He was trying not to hurt the girl and encouraging here to cooperate and clam down so she would not be hurt , until she escalated the violence and risk to him with the bite. Even then he didn’t beat on her repeatedly in anger. He subdued her quickly as a trained police officer should.

We may wish the punch and the mace were not necessary but the cop did what was made necessary by the girl.

I’m the last person who anyone would expect to side with a cop, and I think he was right. His automatic reaction to the girl biting him was to strike her. He then used the pepper spray to be sure she would stop being violent towards him so he could put the cuffs on her.

If she was not a young black female, this would’ve gone differently. There’d be no video of it, and the suspect wouldn’t have been restrained against the hood of the car.

The suspect would’ve been on the ground with a knee in their back while the cop in question forced them into handcuffs.

I hardly think he applied too much force. If anything, he did not apply enough earlier on to prevent himself being bitten.

I agree with this. But I think he was flirting the going over the line. Losing control like that isn’t what you want from a law enforcement officer. They should be held to a higher standard. I’ve seen people in this thread saying that they wouldn’t have blamed him if he had beat the shit out of her. That’s insane.

He lost it for a second in a tough situation, that’s understandable. Any more and he’s over the line.
