Screen Actors Guild nominations

I thought some people might be interested in this. I’ve seen all these movies and so was able to picture the performance as they were announced. My thoughts are in bold.

SCREEN ACTORS GUILD (SAG)

Theatrical Motion Pictures

For Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Winner:
Nominees:

Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Peter Dinklage - The Station Agent
Sir Ben Kingsley - House of Sand and Fog
Bill Murray - Lost In Translation
Sean Penn - Mystic River

2003 winner: Daniel Day-Lewis - Gangs of New York
2002 winner: Russell Crowe - A Beautiful Mind
I’m thrilled for Peter Dinklage! He’s been around for a long time, and finally found a role that showcased his acting talents. I think Sean Penn will win this.

For Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Winner:
Nominees:

Patricia Clarkson - The Station Agent
Diane Keaton - Something’s Gotta Give
Charlize Theron - Monster
Naomi Watts - 21 Grams
Evan Rachel Wood - Thirteen

2003 winner: Renee Zellweger - Chicago
2002 winner: Halle Berry - Monster’s Ball

WHOO! I’ll bet Evan Rachel Wood is doing cartwheels right about now. Charlize has this one already on her mantle. The Oscar too.

For Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Winner:
Nominees:

Alec Baldwin - The Cooler
Chris Cooper - Seabiscuit
Benicio Del Toro - 21 Grams
Tim Robbins - Mystic River
Ken Watanabe - The Last Samurai

2003 winner: Christopher Walken - Catch Me If You Can
2002 winner: Ian McKellen - The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

Chris Cooper is probably doing a double-take. He got in instead of Peter Sarsgaard, Albert Finney and Sean Astin. Good for Alec Baldwin and Ken Watanabe too! I think it’s a race between Robbins and Del Toro. I predict Del Toro.

For Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Winner:
Nominees:

Maria Bello - The Cooler
Keisha Castle-Hughes - Whale Rider
Patricia Clarkson - Pieces of April
Holly Hunter - Thirteen
Renee Zellweger - Cold Mountain

2003 winner: Catherine Zeta-Jones - Chicago
2002 winner: Helen Mirren - Gosford Park

Someone will need to peel Maria Bello off the floor! I’m thrilled beyond belief for Keisha Castle-Hughes! Even though she belongs in the Lead category, it’s nice she was recognized at all. Patricia Clarkson is having a GREAT year! Renee probably has this one.

For Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Theatrical Motion Picture

Winner:
Nominees:

In America
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Mystic River
Seabiscuit
The Station Agent

2003 winner: Chicago
2002 winner: Gosford Park
Hooray for In America and The Station Agent! This will be a battle between ROTK and MR.

Thanks for posting these. Do other actors do the nominating?
I personally am very glad that Johnny Depp’s performance got nominated. Comedy is just as difficult as drama. And in many ways just as important.
I hope ROTK gets the ensemble award. They really, really deserve it.

PS - Supporting Actor or Actress designations are often a mystery to me. Example - How can anyone see Keisha Castle-Hughes wonderful performance as a “supporting” one? Has this category become just a catch-all?

The big surprises are Dinklage, Wood, and the Clarkson double whammy. Also, Station Agent over Cold Mountain in ensemble is a bit of a shocker (though a welcome one). And let me state that nominating Castle-Hughes in supporting for the title role of Whale Rider is really stupid (though SAG also loves those kiddies–remember Dakota Fanning?)

I suspect the awards will go to Penn, Theron, and Robbins, with supporting up in the air (primarily since Zellweger one last year, and IIRC, nobody’s won consecutive SAGs in the individual performance categories before). I’d give the Ensemble edge to “Mystic”, though its only real competition is “LOTR:ROTK”

SAG loves him–he also got a nod for American Beauty despite no critics awards and no subsequent Oscar nomination. Still, I think all the MIAs you listed were better–particularly Sarsgaard in Shattered Glass.

I also don’t think anyone would’ve guessed that The Cooler would’ve received more nods than House of Sand and Fog or Lost in Translation.

I believe that a cross-section of members in SAG form the nominating committees for the awards, so Yes. I believe the full SAG membership votes for the awards. It should be noted that not all members of SAG are members of the Academy, so you’ll see some significant overlap in Oscar nominees, but never identical slates (same goes for the DGA & WGA).

Shameless plug: Don’t forget to participate in the 2nd Annual SDMB Oscar Prediction Contest (with real prizes!). Deadline is Jan. 26!
