Wishing you luck in your new career - and the other aspects of your life.

Yay! - the formal offer came through this morning and I accepted it. The salary offer was a trifle lower than I had hoped for, but still within workable limits and I’m not in a position to be fussy - especially with a job that offers stability like this one.

As of Monday week, I’ll be a civil servant.

Yay! We’re on a (member-)losing streak here – let’s hope it continues.

Congrats on the new job.

Congrats Mangetout!

(you who are leaving won’t forget about the rest of us, right  )

That is great news Mangetout! Wishing you luck and joy in your new career.

That’s fantastic, Mangetout!

Robin

Cheers. No, I’ll keep checking in here and I do wish you all the very best hunting.

I should be getting an offer soon (knock on wood). I have to pass a background check, but that’s never been a problem for me (and this one seems to be about whether I’ve ever abused children, which I haven’t).

Had another interview yesterday, though, that went really badly. I’m feeling a bit dumb now. :frowning:

Good luck Anne Neville!

My news is not as good as I had hoped, but hopefully it isn’t bad news…

I am told that we have been approved for funding from the bank in London. This will fund this development for 12 months.

We were *supposed *to sign papers today and I’m disappointed to learn that the paperwork did not arrive as promised. We supposedly will sign them by next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, although we do not have all the paperwork in place to pay me, the partners have agreed to send me money and we’ll work out the taxes later. I have not accepted this, because of the headaches in paperwork this will cause and because I can continue to live off of my savings for a little while. But it does show a willingness on their end to be accommodating.

All-in-all, not as great as I was hoping, not too bad either.

Way to go Mangetout! As a civil servant, is there going to be something I want from you that requires a little, er, back scratching?

Congratulations. And if you could just accidently drop a row out of the Council Tax database …

If I may jump in with a quick question? I still have a job, although things look bleak, so I’m updating my resume. About 8 years ago I left the PhD I was working on to get a job, and have never gone back. Is it relevant/useful to list on a resume? How would you go about listing it?

I don’t know if I’m encouraged or disheartened to see a thread like this, but if push comes to shove, I’ll use whatever I can find

Thanks for your time.

Is it in a related field? Is the period when you were going to school otherwise an unexplained gap in your chronology?

I’ve got a PhD in an unrelated field, and I have it listed (though, hm, I guess at this point, it being 25 [omigod] years ago, I guess I could just leave it out).

Usually I have a section for education. I would put it there. Simply say that you have x% of PhD complete or, X # of credit towards PhD or however it is measured where you are.

What would you guys do with newspaper interviews in major national Newspapers (no American ones)? Would you use them if they touch your field of expertise, even if a more general line?

And debate-articles for major media outlets?

You’re thinking about listing them as publications on your resume? If you wrote them, or had a part in writing them, list them. I’m not so sure about being intervierwed, or even being written about. I had a kind of freak circumstance last year when I was quoted in hundreds of newspapers on several continents. I ended up saying that, and noting some of the most prominent by name. “…I’ve been quoted by the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, and many others”.

It’s the second part. Some papers have talked to me about the current crisis here; to get my personal perspective (as a normal citizen) on it.

I’ll probably go with the way you did it.

ETA: Mostly the second part. The piece I’m writing I’m definately putting there.

If you were interviewed because you have some particular expertise on an isuue, it’s worth listing. I wouldn’t list an interview where I was selected more or less randomly – it’d be like listing that I was asked for my opinion in a poll.

That makes sense. I’ll have to think about listing it then. Since sure, they were looking for my particular input on it (they didn’t want to talk to just anybody), but it’s not like they were doing an interview with the head of the IMF on the current structural integrity of the Icelandic banking system (to make an example that just popped into my head - really!)

Then I suppose it boils down to why they singled you out, and perhaps also how much of your words did they publish. If they wrote a story focusing on you and your opinions, you might say that X newspaper wrote a feature story about you. I dunno, that’s kind of a close call to make.
