SDMB Auction fantasy football league

Ouch, as if me playing him nine on three wasn’t enough.

We had a couple fuckups. When cricehammer was down to $5 he thought his roster was full but he still had one empty space. Also SenorBeef went $9 over the limit, affecting his last five acquisitions. Not sure what you guys want to do about either of those issues, if anything. Frankly, I’m amazed we got through it with so few problems.

Hmm. That’s tricky.

On one hand, I made my last few bids because I was under the impression that I had that amount of money left. Had I known I had a smaller amount, I’d have bid differently.

On the other hand, I don’t want to have an unfair advantage over everyone else.

I’ll go along with whatever the consensus is on how to handle it.

As far as crice - I don’t know. Maybe give him one free agent signing before the opening of waivers, since at that point no one was bidding and he’d have been able to get whoever he wanted?

Yeah, as for you, I believe I was telling you you had that much money left, so I’d say it isn’t your fault and we should let it slide. If you really wanted to offer something, I’d recommend tossing Randy Moss into the free agent pool and calling it even.

For cricehammer, since VarlosZ was in no position to outbid him and nobody else was still in, I say we give him any (non-Colt or Saint) player he wants for $2, thus preserving his waiver priority while ensuring that VarlosZ would not have outbid him.

Ultra motherfucking gay. It didn’t start my players, even though I only had 3.

Peyton, stop throwing so much.

I don’t really think we need to do anything about SenorBeef going over by $9, bidding was being operated on the assumptions that the current money count was correct, and it doesn’t seem like there was any intended duplicity involed.

$9 sounds about right for all of his work setting this up, too.

I don’t think it woulda mattered, even though Peyton had a great game. I thought you were just being saucy by throwing the first week entirely, that was part of your Evil-Genius Master Plan, right?

Well, I didn’t want to throw the first week. I knew I’d get stomped on, but I didn’t want a curbside one.
I always like scouring the waiver wire in my traditional leagues. I get to put in overtime in this one.

Here’s my ranking of the rosters at this stage.

I’m excluding LOUNE because he doesn’t really have a roster yet and I’m not sure how to evaluate him. I am, though, at this stage rooting for his epic failure because I’d rather not see his strategy win. I think he could be top 3, though, based on the fact that we’re an 8 team league with relatively few starter positions (if we did QB/QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/WR/TE/TE/K/DE/DE or something crazy like we were talking about his strategy would be far more likely to fail), but it depends on the health and consistency of his players. If any of them sees significant downtime he’s going to flounder.

  1. Cobra Kai (Diomedes)
A roster with Larry Johnson and Joseph Addai is going to be dominant. Alex Smith won’t be top 3, and probably not top 6, but he’ll have some big games. The receivers are middle of the pack with little depth, but the starters are decent. I normally like to give my top rating to a more well rounded team, but I think a starting combo of Johnson and Addai is going to stomp everyone.

  2. Overly Sentimental (cricehammer)
Steven Jackson and Willie Parker will be a great combo. Has crazy running back depth for cheap (Clinton Portis, Ahman Green, Fred Taylor), good starting receivers, a little weak at tight end, and a top 5 defense. A lot of depth and potential.

  3. Last Place (Kiros)
Depending on how Shanahan screws with Travis Henry, this team has the potential to be the most consistent producer. Rudi Johnson is about as consistent as they come, Travis Henry can be if the coach lets him - Edge is underrated anyway and a good backup. He has possibly the top starting receiving corps with Fitz, Owens, and Housh. Tom Brady, Gonzo, and Balitmore are good to excellent starters at each position. Not quite as much depth as some of the other rosters have.

  4. Varlos’ Zzzzzzz (VarlosZ)
Varlos got the steal of the draft grabbing Antonio Gates at only $34. I don’t blame him though - I nominated him in the first round specifically because I know people like to overdraft/spend for him, and I thought with so much money flying around someone would overpay. We all overpaid for some of our early picks relative to what was available later. Gore and Maroney will be good. You’ll probably be playing matchups at QB, with none of them being top tier. Receiving corps is probably in the top half, but barely.

  5. Good Rex Bad Rex (Omniscient)
McGahee and Westbrook starting. I’m not big on McGahee this year, I don’t think he’ll do much more than Jamal did on that team last year. Westbrook is a good one if he and McNabb stay healthy. Probably the strongest QB tandem, but among the weaker WR corps - not too much depth or potential sleepers, although Norwood has the most potential of anyone to be this year’s MJD.

  6. Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef)
A big portion of my rating is coming from the starting running back tandem, and I have the worst. What I do have is a lot of talented RBs that are sharing time - Bush, MJD, Williams, Peterson, and Lynch. I suspect my team will start badly and get stronger throughout the year as at least one of my time share backs becomes the primary carrier due to injury or performance reasons. By playoff time, I hope my RB position is looking stronger for that reason. I have among the best receiving corps from top to bottom, decent QBs, and it’s a homer pick but I think Lewis might be a solid starter on the level slightly below a Rudi Johnson.

  7. New York Fanboys (Ellis Dee)
You didn’t have much of a chance to make the top of my rating by limiting yourself mostly to two teams, although I think you’ve got a shot at the playoffs. I just don’t expect either offense to be that explosive.

I don’t feel too strongly about these ratings, because I think our team quality ended up becoming pretty even. It wouldn’t surprise me to see any one of us win the championship.

It’d be cool if everyone else gave their own personal rankings, although you don’t have to elaborate on each one.

  1. Overly Sentimental (cricehammer)
Tons of depth on this roster, Chuck seems to have had the best draft strategy of all (although we’re all waiting to see if LOUNE’s pays off). I don’t like any of his RB backups, but at least one of them is bound to pay off in spades. The rest of the roster looks great, given that Brees doesn’t have another game like Thursday’s.

  2. Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef)
While I don’t think this team is going to shine in it’s regular season record, it’s good enough all around to make the playoffs, and I think the vast amount of choice at the RB position is going to ensure success in the playoffs. Definitely an excellent shot to win it all.

  3. Cobra Kai (Diomedes)
My starting tandem is good enough to put me in this place, but the rest of my roster is a little suspect. If my starting WRs perform reasonably for a few weeks (while I flesh out the necessary backups, and hopefully win a few of the decent waiver WRs that always crop up over the course of the season), I think I have a very good shot at taking the regular season crown. I can definitely see Larry going down to injury in the late season and Addai’s workload getting shared when the Colts clinch the playoffs at the end of our playoffs. Alex Smith -will- be a top five drafted QB next year.

  4. Varlos’ Zzzzzzz (VarlosZ)
If the QBs didn’t all smell somewhat funny to me, and the D didn’t promise to stink, I’d rank this team higher. Maroney is going to have a huge year, with the blessings of the Pat’s much-improved offense and declingin defense. Gore will produce, and the wide-outs look nice to me, with three boom-or-bust prospects waiting on the bench to shake out.

  5. Last Place (Kiros)
I agree essentially with almost everything SenorBeef said about this team, but I think that shakes out to consistent mediocrity. This team looks to me to be one of the top point getters, but that just doesn’t win enough games. That’s one of the problems with worrying abotu top-flight WRs, they will put up numbers in bunches, and then have quiet games. Tony G is getting old.

  6. Where are the Whores? (LOUNE)
You can count on 60 points per game from your 3 starters, but last placed on the first waiver wire means the rest of the team is going to consist of guys that shouldn’t be starting in a fantasy team. Bye weeks for the top three are going to be throw-away weeks for this team, as was the first week. Mailing in four losses doesn’t bode well, maybe if they all had the same bye, and you could only have given up on two weeks?

  7. Good Rex Bad Rex (Omniscient)
Westbrook, Wayne, Palmer, and either one of the top two D’s? Sounds like a nice start, but I’m waiting to see what you can shake out of trades before I see this team competing with some of the others.

  8. New York Fanboys (Ellis Dee)
A great draft strategy could have netted you the best team in the league, especially if you’d thrown your muscle around towards the end of the draft. But I don’t like either of these two offenses, which pretty much means I don’t like your team. Sorry, mate.

I can’t believe you guys are putting my team in the bottom half. I have the top 2 defenses, the 3rd and 6th rated QB, the 3rd TE and 2 top 12 WRs. Plus I have two of the top 10 RBs neither of whom are in a time share.

A lot of my success rides on McGahee, I realize this. Jamal Lewis, who looked like he needed a walker last season, managed 1200+ yards in that offense, and the Ravens haven’t had under 1600+ yards rushing as a team since Bam Morris was toting the rock. McGahee has been averaging 3.8 yards a carry behind an atrocious offensive line in Buffalo on a team that was ALWAYS playing from behind. Old Man Lewis went for 3.6 yards a carry last season, so there’s little reason to expect McGahee to do worse than he did last year. Honestly, I’ve built every fantasy team I have around the idea that McGahee will go for over 1600+ yards and 12 TDs this year, number which I think are very conservative.

Anyways, with Palmer, McGahee, Westbrook, Wayne, Johnson, Heap and the Bears/Chargers defense I’m in the top 4, period. With Barber, Norwood and Ronnie Brown in the stable I’m pretty insulated if Westbrook and/or McGahee under perform. or get hurt.

You guys are high…and screwed.

My ranks 3 to 6 are pretty close together - I don’t expect the third team to be much stronger than the 6th, and how I ranked you was just by feel. You have a good team, but not that much depth/sleeper potential which is probably why I rated you in the middle of the 3-6 close bunch. I didn’t mean any disrespect and I ranked you over myself. Feel free to give us your ranks though.

While I may be being harsh to McGahee, to call 1600 yards “conservative” for almost anyone is a stretch, especially for a guy whose career year was under 1300 yards.

Both SenorBeef and I are required, by law, to overrate Jamal Lewis’ game, and focus on the craptastic nature of the Baltimore O-line on the run. Picking up high YPC on a team playing from behind doesn’t say much. Picking up a lot of yards when you’re playing the Browns defense twice per year (good for 400 yards a year for Jamal, usually) helped, too. That run-D will be better this year.
I don’t like Brown or Norwood, but I didn’t notice Barber in your stable. Having a third RB for depth is about as good as you need in a 2RB league. Maybe I should bump you up a few notches, but for now, I invite you to earn it.

You’ll sure as hell lose next week, though.

It might end up that Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch will be my starting RBs soon enough. For $14, they put up 22.3 and 15.9 points respectively on their NFL debut.

If I had started Randy Moss (I didn’t want to start him in his first game when who knows how he’ll be) along with those two, I’d be rocking crazy point totals right now. My “optimal roster” from the live stat tracker is around 140, double anyone else’s.

Seriously. While I’m not sold that Randy will be consistently anywhere near as he was today, those guys are going to have great seasons if they stay healthy.

Meh. Go ahead and underrate me. I’ll strike gold on the waiver wire. I like digging on the waiver wires. There’s always something there, especially as far as receivers are concerned.

Like I said, I think you’ll do pretty well because with an 8 man league with the number of starters we each have there will be plenty of people up for grabs in free agency. You’ll get a fine K and D, suffer a little at TE, and have the chance at okay but not good WRs. If any of your big 3 get hurt at some point, though, you’re hosed.

Ellis Dee is going to beat me with his damn New York teams. Who expected E Manning to Burress to be like P Manning to Harrison? Dallas will have a long year defensively if they keep that up. I have to be the victim the one week that Eli does well

Barring something whacky, I don’t think the Monday night games are going to change anything.

Bench stars:

Me: Kitna 23 (started McNabb) Lynch 15, Peterson 22, Randy Moss 24, Calvin Johnson 13 - looks like I went majorly wrong in my lineup in week 1, or I could be the league’s high scorer.

Ellis Dee: Tynes 13 - not bad for a kicker.

Varlos: B Roethlisburger 22, Holmes 12

Chuck: Romo 35

I feel for you,** Ellis**, with your bad Eli news and all. My condolences.
On the humorous side, apparently Calvin Johnson’s new nickname is “Megatron”.

If it makes you feel any better, you can have Charlie Frye for free.

Wait, no, that’s never made anyone feel better ever.

On the plus side, after that abomination the fan pressure to start Quinn is going to be so high that the owner might have to step in and start Quinn to avoid rioting. Current rumor is that Ken Dorsey (yep, Ken Dorsey) was back at the Browns facility and he might replace Frye. Quinn apparently was quite upset when he was cut, because he was the only quarterback on the team smart enough to help him break down game film, give advice, etc.

Remember, by the way, to e-mail me for waiver claims, I know a few of you have open spots on your roster. You can wait for free agency if you want, of course. If you have any questions about the system feel free to ask about them now.

I did email you. I sent it through Yahoo’s system. Actually, I sent my list on Saturday, I believe.
Shall I re-send?
