Gunslinger - check out the Springfield Armory Champion. It is a 4" barrel 1911 with a full-size frame. The stock number is PX9142L. I won’t post the Springfield Armory URL here - I think that kind of thing is discouraged here. Anyway, this pistol is “Loaded” with value added features. Probably the very best buy in a Commander-sized 1911.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, Gunslinger, that there are some good parts available for your Guide Gun from a shop up here - Wild West Guns. That’s the shop that make the Co-Pilot, praised by Jeff Cooper and others. Wild West Guns has a website, but like I said earlier…
Vancouver, WA. Next door to portland, OR.
I also have an AR-15 carbine of the bushmaster variety and a modified 1903A3 Springfield, and a slightly modified Remington 870 12 guage(primary modification is a longer mag tube, increasing capacity by 2).
I have more, but those are the only quasi-military weapons I have.
Do you permenatly attach them (via glue or something?) or merely temporary attach them?
Good ideas. I’ll keep those in mind.
I have seen an accessory available for Winchester model 94 and clones that attaches to the lever and operates the trigger as the bolt closes. I saw a fellow use this quite effectively in a match where he was engaging multiple targets so fast it seemed like he was shooting a semi-auto carbine. I’m not sure this is allowed in SASS matches, though. It looked like the attachment could be folded down or something so that the lever worked in the normal fashion, too. This was several years ago, so maybe the device was deemed unsafe. It would be pretty easy to forget it was there and have an AD when you closed the lever, I think. Have any of you folks seen a device similar to what I am trying to describe?
You can do the wrap several different ways. Some folks use a long strip and make a spiral wrap around the lever, tucking it under at the end. I do harness stitching so I make a strip that is sewn with a baseball stitch around the outside. One caveat about wraps is that if you don’t provide lubrication the metal may rust underneath. I live in a dry climate but saturate the lever with Ballistol oil.
You’re probably thinking of the '92 Winchester like the modified one Chuck Conners used in The Rifleman for his speed shooting. Would be very illegal in SASS to use such an externally modified gun but pointless as lots of top shooters are faster anyway with Henry action rifles like the Henry, Yellowboy/'66 and '73 Winchesters. There is an internal modification being done on these rifles that cycles the action with a flick of the shooter’s second finger but lots are extremely fast with an unmodified rifle.
It’s been quite a while since this thread was active, but I thought it would might be interesting to discuss this topic with all the new members. The holidays are over and we’ve had a chance to decompress a bit, so… Did anyone get a new firearm for Christmas? bbbill, did you get that FAL finished? Gunslinger, which Springfield Armory pistol did you finally choose? Did any of you folks ever get together for a range session?
Holy resurrected threads, batman!
I forgot an entry, way 'back when: My Beretta FP1200 12-bore. Black as the devil’s backside, and very much a ‘service’ shotgun.
Speaking of drool-inducing weapons from Beretta: The Cx4 Carbine.
About two weeks ago, I picked up "Megan “, a flattop Bushmaster V-Match 20” AR-15 (gonna be my varminter/long-range ‘plinker’. Haven’t had a chance to play with her yet, but maybe after a few more weeks or so.
Being a varminter, anyone got any hints on a decent scope? Someone at work recommended a BSA red-dot for me, but I think I might save that for “Regina” (the ‘room broom’ for competitions).
Hell, anyone got any recommendations for red-dot scopes too?
Currently, I’m working on saving my pennies for a Kimber Pro BP Ten II (scroll down).

Man, I just love my 40s and 45s.
That’s a nice pistol, Tripler. Does it accept Para-Ordnance magazines?
The BSA red dots are pretty nice and inexpensive. I have one on my wife’s Buckmark and have used on on a friends MP5K PDW but I actually prefer the H&K iron sights there. I might mount on on my M-4gery
I have a Weaver V24 6-24x which has been an excellent scope and has the best return to zero I think but the contrast isn’t as high as good B&L or Leupold glass. The Japanese made BSA platinum scopes are worth a look. I’ve got a 40X for rimfire benchrest.
I don’t know. . . It’s a compact M1911-style so that’s a good question.
When I pick it up, I’ll drop a line. Got a mag I can borrow? I’ll see if it fits. . .
Padeye, if you like the BSA red-dot ones, maybe I’ll take your word on it and pick one up. I saw a good one for $69.95. I’ll give it a whirl. . . Got any thoughts on plain ol’ hunting scopes?

I need a bipod for “Megan” too. . .
Tripler, these articles from G&A might interest you:

Yessir, I do have a few of those magazines. But they are dang near worth their weight in gold. I thought the pistol you are considering had a four-inch barrel, but with the standard length frame. Even if it is a “compact,” I’m sure you know that the Para-Ordnance is offered in a “compact” frame, too. The Kimber website says (in the Ten II High Capacity section), In addition to replacement 10 round magazines, pre-ban 14 round magazines are also available. They are offered for sale (where legal) through Kimber Master Dealers and the Kimber Custom Shop. They have the same overall length as the standard magazine included with each Pro Carry, Stainless or Gold Match Ten pistols, and fit flush with the bottom of the grip. It doesn’t state whether the high-cap mags are Kimber or Para-Ord, though. It could very well be a magazine that is configured like the Para-Ord - there are several pistols on the market that accept the Para-Ord magazine.
B-Square makes a bipod that is comparable to the Harris product. What I really like about the B-Square is that you attach the bipod and still have use of the sling swivel. I’m not sure if you need the AR-15 adapter for the B-Square bipod, like you do for the Harris bipod. They prolly give that info on their website. Hmmm… now that I’m thinking about it, I believe they offer a red dot sight, too. Maybe you can do a little “one stop shopping.”
Mine are the 30mm models which are available for about $35 from Midway or Cabelas. I’ve seen them at Wal-Mart but I think those fit rimfire tipoff mounts not a Weaver rail like the regular ones.
Great thread, guys! I’ve got a pre-ban Colt Sporter and I just got a DPMS A3 flattop, heavy barrel both black as the ace of spades. I’ve accumulated so many firearms that I’ve outgrown my safe and I need to get another one, but I’m trying to save my pennies for the holy grail of black rifle shooting, IMHO anyway…Night vision. Trouble is, a good deal on another rifle or pistol always crops up and I wind up buying it and then I have to start all over again.
BF, great links! Thanks a bunch! In particular, I also liked a link to another message board, somewhat similar to my other favorite gun board [sub]which I’m not sure I can mention or not. More to follow later. . .[/sub]
radar ralf, I’ve never had a chance to play with any Para-Ordnance ‘toys’, and only one or two Kimbers. Why that BP Pro Carry? My father made me promise I’d buy one for myself. The BP is a 4" barrel, but not all frames are made alike. Besides, the locking pin in the magazine well may or may not be machined/be in the same spot as the BP carry. But, when she gets here/‘is born’, I’ll let you know.
. . . and yes, I call them all “my kids”.
That V-Match ought to be interesting. It’s got a free-floating handguard, but I wasn’t aware the front sling loop was machined onto the gas port. Seems to me it kinda defeats the purpose of a free floating barrel. . . But thanks for the hint on B-square!
