SDMB consensuses that you disagree with

Maybe running Rachel Corrie over was over the top. But I think we should run Rachael Ray over with a bulldozer. She’s perky to the point that she makes me want to vomit.

consensus on SDMB seems to be that Harry Potter books are wonderful, wonderful. I could only make it through the first one…the author is derivative to a fault and needs an editor she’ll never get now.

The Big Parade. Goodbye Mr. Chips. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. The African Queen. The Grand Illusion. The Lost Battalion. Mata Hari. The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. East of Eden. Random Harvest. Mr. Skeffington. The Lost Patrol. A Farewell to Arms. Johnny Got His Gun. Waterloo Bridge. Hell’s Angels. etc. etc.

Um, MASH * does count; what, no movie with subtext counts? Plus of course:* The Steel Helmet. The Manchurian CAndidate. The Bridges of Toko Ri. Brother Rat. Inchon.Retreat, Hell! War Hunt. Mission Over Korea. Pork Chop Hill. Battle Hymn. MacArthur. Sayonara. Fixed Bayonets! *
No question that WWII, like the Settling of the West, is among the greatest of all American movie subjects. But still, there have been some notable exceptions.

OK? I made it halfway through the second, but my red-pencilling instincts finally got the better and I threw the damn thing across the room. Plus I don’t like the themes at all. I’m NOT a fan of the HP books.

I’d like to second (fifith? Sixth?) In 'n Out Burger’s utter shititude. I’d rather puke than eat those fries.

I don’t know if it’s a consensus, but it seems to be a majority here: in every thread about music, a bunch of people always gush over wank-rock/prog shit such as Pink Floyd/Yes/ELP/Rush/Radiohead (Pink Floyd, Jr.) or boring-ass white blues classic rot (Clapton, Led Zep, Allman Bros., Skynyrd, etc.). It boggles my mind that anybody who wasn’t so unfortunate as to be in high school during the early-mid 70s could possibly think any of this dinosaur rock is exciting.

Ok, I agree that IN-n-Out is not all that.

I think Spielberg’s A.I. is a fantastic movie, easily one of his best and better than what Kubrick would have accomplished with it.

The Truman Show, while entertaining, is not a masterpeice, is in fact lacking and incomplete.

Anchorman is one of the all time funniest movies and Will Ferrel makes enjoyable movies (yes, he has clunkers, but generally I like his body of work).

Godfather III is a pretty good movie. True it pales compared to I and II, but compare it to 99% of all other movies and it is much better.

My opinion on Stephen King’s is that he is one of the best writers of character and setting ever. When he sets the stage and the characters start talking, I’m THERE. That’s part of what makes his books so terrifying - the vampires are coming for YOU.

  • You forgot the best one of them all!* (which, honestly, I would take over any WW2 movie that comes to mind).

*Since Blimp covers multiple conflicts, I’m not counting it in this statement

Oh - also, Krispy Kreme is the nastiset “food” out there. Every time I think it sounds good, I take one bite and that’s as far as I can go.

I would like to say in advance that I realize that admitting this probably means that no one on the SDMB will ever listen to a single thing I have to say about anything in Cafe Society again, but I’m gonna do it anyway.

I actually enjoy reading Piers Anthony. I know the consensus is that he is a hack whose work isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on but I do like him. I own the Incarnations of Immortality series, several of the Xanth novels and read them fairly regularly.

sigh Well, there goes any cred I had in this forum.

I’ll spot you the Kremes, that’s some shit (from another post).

However, I have a serious like for Floyd/Yes/ELP and Radiohead and most of the blues classic rot (except Skynyrd). So shere some alternatives. Who, in your humble opinion, should I test drive? My ears accept they may need education.

Double posting again. The Tarot trilogy were the best three books ever written. J.R.R. could have learned. There were other early books that I want to find again. Xanth is, however, tripe.

Oh, I don’t even think you have to go really “underground” or anything - just good rock stuff like The Clash or Television or The Replacements, that’s still “classic” in a sense, but without all the pomposity. My personal favorites that most of the classic rock fans can get into are Husker Du, Robyn Hitchcock and the first Gang of Four album. I’d be happy to send you a mix CD, if you’d like.

d’Oh! And I just saw that (Men in War) last year, while I was on an Anthony Mann kick . . .

Or just help me build a Pandora station. I love that site, reggae, Dire Straits, Dylan, that have done well by me.

Yeah, I liked Incarnations of Immortality, and I’m reading the Phaze/Proton books that I can find.

I’ll forgive your blasphemous remarks about Pink Floyd because I totally agree with you about those little greasewads. Gross beyond belief.

Is it okay if I think the first three (maybe four or five but definitely three) Xanth books are decent fun, though the rest are just silly and bad?

Or does even this make me non-consensical?

Contrary to any of the weekly discussion threads, I, for one, enjoy Studio 60, and think it’s been steadily improving each week.

Wow- you got all he ones I was going to mention plus more. I would add that there are two versions of The Dawn Patrol.
