Hi, due to some interest in another thread I created an (unofficial) SDMB Discord.
What’s Discord? It’s a chat platform that allows for realtime text and voice communication. It’s more useful for just hanging out and having small realtime discussions or quick questions, not having big discussions with cites and essays and effortposts like here. You’re free to just use the text, or to use the voice channels to talk.
The rules are much more strict than here, since I created it and I have to admin it and I’m not dealing with some of the stuff allowed here, but it should be fairly relaxed. When joining you’ll land in a newbie quarantine zone. If you join, you please PM a moderator that you’re trying to join with your Discord username, or post in this thread. This is to keep random people parsing the link from Google out (it happens, my main discord got a server raid from posting a bare link on the second day it existed. Learned from that mistake). I won’t be letting brand new or very very inactive SDMB users in, sorry. Get some posting history first.
This invite link is set to expire after 10 uses. Since SDMB doesn’t allow edits after 5 minutes and I don’t want to bug a mod every time it hits the cap to edit this post, if it says the link has expired please check later in the thread to see if there’s a newer one, or ask for a new one to be created.
I’m accepting people to be moderators. Ideally you should be familiar with Discord (or at least Slack, close enough), and be willing to uphold the rules I set out.
I want to be clear this is unnofficial and is no way affiliated with the SDMB, or owners of the column. Do not bring drama from the Discord here, just like drama from satellite boards like Giraffe Boards is not allowed. That said, if you are a moderator or admin here, there is a special role I’ll give you. It doesn’t give you any special powers on the Discord but does make your name a pretty color.
Also if I could get a copy of the SD mini-logo we use as a favicon to use for the Discord server image that’d be swell. Alternatively if you have a better idea for that speak up.
