SDMB FOOTIE FOCUS: February

Well on the bright side it will be something to tell the grandchildren (“Oi Grandad! Stop going on about being 3-0 up against mancs and losing!” It’ll my equivalent of talking about the war).

It was a complete shambles. Dalmat went missing, keller doesn’t do the basics right (catching, punching kicking), Carr is simply a prick and our season is now effectively over.

On the bright side my nine year old boy thought it was brilliant as there were so many goals ,and we played just like his school side. They always lose too.

PLEAT OUT! It is no coincidence that the worst period in our history has been overseen by that Ted Bovis lookalike cunt.

Wow.

At first I felt sorry for my countryman Arni Gautur Arason as it seemed his debut wouldn’t wouldn’t be an entirely enjoyable one. Knowing what he can do, I’m pretty sure he would have saved Ziege’s free kick on a good day but he can hardly be blamed for Keane’s flawless finish or King’s aparent loss of identity (who DID he think he was?) and he saved face with some superb saves in the second half… I’m not expecting him to take James’ place in the first team quite yet, though.

The greatest comeback in the history of the FA cup? I’m not too familiar with FA cup games of the past but it has to rate very near the top. Once again I fail to see why Tottenham fans would want to hang on to Dalmat, sure he has creativity and flair but when push comes to shove he is at least a defensive liability IMHO.

TwistofFate Why does that suprise you? I thought the plan all along was for him to stay on as DOF, and the fans had pleaded with the board only to hire him as an interim manager - so that they wouldn’t lose him as DOF? That is, of course, IIRC - I’ve always been under the impression that Tottenham fans were a myth and the crowd at WHL was either a trick of the light of a lot of confused tourists wondering why Arsenal were playing in white…

OR a lot of confused tourists wondering why Arsenal were playing in white.

Sorry about the double post, spelling mistake and possible insult…

One of the things I most vividly recall is King Kev putting his hand over his mouth after Tottenham’s third went in; it was like he was thinking ‘This could go to 6 or 7 and I could wake up tomorrow and be out of a job’. And that was before that annoying brat got sent off . . .

Just remarkable.

Fwiw, I really don’t care very much for the Cup. But had this been in the Prem . . .

 Get a grip Owl; you do recall the near bankruptcy and/or the relegation season ?

And who’s Ted Bovis - Pleat reminds me of Ribsby or Mr Punch ?

At the moment, we’re mid-table mediocrity that got to the quarter final of a Cup, has a core of 20 class players, mainly young and full of potential. What we don’t have is a manager and half-a-dozen more in the squad, as well as rid of the corresponding dead wood.

Make that Rigsby, and not least because Wenger reminds me of Miss Jones.

Ted Bovis was the comedian in Hi-de-Hi (played by paul Shane).

Wenger looks like Professor Yaffle from Bagpuss (And Harry Redknapp looks like Bagpuss)

The relegation season is still remembered fondly - we did at least have the nucleus of a good side (and don’t forget we only went back up on goal difference). Despite last night I think we have a good squad developing. I just don’t think Pleat has any idea what to do with it.

For example; it is obvious to everyone that Poyet is shot. Even pleat only put him on the bench as he can’t do 90 mins anymore. So why send him on in the 8th minute?

We have changed; Charimen; Boards; Managers and players. The one constant through all the mediocrity has been Pleat. It’s time to get rid.

It seemed to be the proverbial game of two halves last night.
I listened to it on the radio, Harry Redknapp said at half time that Man. City showed all the signs of a team on their way out of the premiership. Of course that may be so, but it is encouraging that your average football manager hasn’t got any more idea of what the hell’s going on than your average supporter (or even your average commentator –they kept saying there was no way back for City).
I must admit though, I never had Keegan down for someone who can give a team a rocket up the arse. Always seemed such a nice chap to me.
At least Spurs can concentrate on their league position now.
See, there’s always a bright side, even for Tottenham Hotspur.

Any more jokes involving Spurs signing David Blunkett (as someone who knows how to hang onto a lead) or Man City (doing more damage than Saddam’s WMD in 45 minutes) are not terribly welcome any more.

I’ve borne all I can.

Please, have mercy.

Or David Pleat’s new house - three up four down, or the fact that Tottenham High Rd is closed for our end of season party.

Yes it’s getting a bit much.

The bloody Sun was asking for anti-spurs jokes on it’s website yesterday.

Never a dull moment…

Hibs have now managed to dump both sides of the Old Firm out of the League Cup, and will contest the first completely non-OF Scottish final since 1997. Fair play to them. The last time a non-OF team even so much as won a trophy was 1998. Good for the league I suppose, though I’d still rather it was us.

According to Popbitch (yes, I know): Sven; Gary Lineker and the boy Beckham have something other than England in common.

He’s an absolute rabbit that Sven isn’t he? I take my hat off to the bloke.

I notice that Oldham are likely to come out of Administration quite soon- it looks like good news in theory, but I just worry slightly that the new owners might be a little lively, as it were.

Anyway, hopefully good news for Crusoe and them oop north, aye.

I don’t care much about the Carling Cup so the defeat on tuesday didn’t ruin my day. And Middlesbrough was the better team over two legs.

But the ref almost ruined the game. Middlesbrough had 8 or 9 professional fouls but only got a yellow card for the 9th while Arsenal had 2 and got the yellow card for both.

But the worst was the penalty situation with Reyes at the start of the second half. Reyes, alone with the keeper, kicks the ball past the keeper and then tries to jump over the keepers mistimed tackle. The keeper still touches Reyes foot and Reyes falls, and the ref gives a… corner kick.
If the ref had said that he wasn’t sure if it was a penalty or didn’t see the touch or that he thought that the ball was out of play it would have been fine with me. But he gave a corner kick which indicated that he thought that the keeper touched the ball. But it was obvious that the keeper wasn’t close to the ball. I think that the ref saw the touch by the keeper and thought it would be a soft penalty(which it would have been) and took the cowards way out.

I understand that refs sometimes can’t be sure but this cowards way out that I’ve seen many times really anoys me.

And L_C I won’t make any jokes, infact I still think that Tottenham isn’t far from a world class team. .

In the game I saw, Reyes kicked the ball away before jumping over Schwarzer and tumbling expertly trying to get the penalty. Reyes didn’t have a chance of ever getting the ball after he kicked it away. A lot of strikers do this, if the keeper is going after a loose ball they try and kick the ball away from his hands, never mind where to, and try and get the penalty. I aggree, though - Arsenal should never have had that corner kick. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Reyes get carded, actually.

Mind you, had the exact same thing happened to Owen I would be demanding a penalty and a red card for the keeper.

Great 3-0 win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup. Larsson, whose form has been shaky of late, set up the first two and scored the third. As good a performance as I’ve seen from the Bhoys this season (at least in the first half, but they didn’t need to do much in the second), and an absolutely disgraceful one from Hearts, who were lucky to finish the game with nine men. I hope Neil Lennon has some good painkillers at home.

Depending on the outcome of tomorrow’s match, we’ll face either Killie or the huns in the quarter-final next month

I agree that it shouldn’t have been a penalty but Reyes didn’t dive. He tried to jump over the keeper but there was contact which will make you tumble at that speed. If he wanted a penalty all he had to do was to not jump that high and get hit by Schwarzer’s misstimed tackle and the ref would have to give him a penalty.

BTW I see Liverpool played 2-2 against Bolton today which means Newcastle is now in 4th place. Bye, bye to Houlier and Owen this summer?

I am overweight, old and with an unhelathy lifestyle. Prime heart attack fodder in other words.

This THFC team is not helping.

As I said - never a dull moment.

At the risk of talking to myself I would say:

“Trappatoni with Mark Hughes as his deputy? Corblimey luv a duck!” Don’t belive a word of it mesself but it’s in the Evening Gooner so it must be true.

Also my hometown team (Winchester City) won in the 5th Round of the FA Vase, so a trip to Cardiff may still be a possibility.

Another thought is that Defoe has scored in all his debuts. We had another striker who did that - Jimmy Greaves. Here’s hoping…

Defoe looked good. I thought i looked like exactly what you guys needed (and what Postiga was supposed to be).

he not “i”

I didn’t play. Obviously. (Although Pleat did email me and ask…)
