A Football (Soccer) Discussion Thread Anyone? Anyone?

My last attempt at this lasted as long as a Newcastle lead, but I thought I’d have one last try.

Firstly: Moderators: Please do not punt this into Café Society again. It’s like the Island of Dr Morreau in there. There are people in there who actively like RUSH! Yes really RUSH! And not just the old stuff either – they actually like the modern uber-wanky stuff. That is no place for proper people. I know it’s sometime called the “beautiful game” (by people who have never seen Phil Neville play), but footy isn’t really art.

So after the first few games what do people think?

My first thoughts:

The Filth: Look awesome again, and they’ve held on to Mr Peanut head, which was the only cloud on their summer. Unfortunately I think they’ll win the league at a cruise. Europe is still a challenge for them, although they’ve got a cakewalk draw.

Chelsea: A solid start, grinding out results – but not yet the finished article. Hope they crash and burn.

Liverpool: Surprisingly crap. Only £8m for Owen? Blimey! They will struggle. It’s only the general ineptness of the other teams that might get them a CL place.

Newcastle: Soap opera. Corking entertainment. Give Shearer the job. Think of the hilarity!

My team (Spurs): I am walking in a Santini wonderland. It really couldn’t be better. I really thought we could be bottom at this stage and the press would be ripping into “crisis club THFC”. Looks like saints and Newcastle have that role this year.

England – Will qualify at a canter then go out in the Quarter finals unless we give the useless Swede the elbow.

Other thoughts: It would be intriguing to see what Clive Woodward would be like as a footie boss. Can’t see it happening though.

One of the reasons for that might well be that this:

might as well be Chinese to the Americans on this board. Even us non FA watching, non Jerusalem singing, non Stilton eating monkeys might need a dictionary. Heck, even figuring out which team the “Gunners” are might be beyond the Yanks.

I have to agree with the need to get rid of Eriksson for England to have any chance at all. The man reminds me of an anorexic Dick Advocaat. Sven-Göran should stick to shtupping his secretaries and leave the football to others.

Now, who the hell is Mr. Peanut Head, and which team are you referring to by “The Filth”? Since you’re a Spurs supporter, I assume it’s Arsenal. Am I correct?

I also think they’ll win the league (and probably the FA cup also). The second round of the CL (they should cruise, but PSV might give them a scare in Eindhoven) will depend on who they draw there.

Well, I don’t know that he’s expecting Yanks, but I (a Yank) do in fact know who the Gunners are. And probably a few other things, as well. Unfortunately I don’t see much of the Premiership in my current locale, so I have to rely on what makes it into the local papers, which is precious little. Anyway most of my interest in the FA, aside from seeing a good match every now and again, is watching the progress of any Yanks out there. To that end, how has Jonathan Spector looked thus far?

The SPL might actually have a race for second this year. Seriously, Rangers are that bad.

Long may it continue

And look who’s in second now!!! Yes, the vaunted “Wall of Wool” defense has now gone four SPL matches, and one Cup match, without conceding a single goal!

By “Peanut Head,” owl means Patrick Vieira, the inspirational Arsenal midfielder. And for him, Arsenal are “the filth”–Arsenal supporters use the same term when referring to Tottenham, so you have to know the context (i.e., that owl supports Spurs) to know which side he’s referring to.

Santini is the new Spurs coach (and former France coach).

I support Arsenal (this is the cue for owl to start making fun of me for being from Florida…), and I’m delighted with the start to our season. Reyes is fabulous, Fabregas is very, very promising, and Henry is as wonderful as ever. I just hope Campbell returns from injury soon–Cygan makes me very nervous.

And Bergkamp is like a good wine–he just keeps getting better.

The distance between supporter and team is more of a Manchester United thing really. In any case, give it long enough and Plumstead Nomads wil probably end up playing in Florida - they seem happy to move their stadium on wheels around fairly regularly, so it’s probably only a matter of time. The first Franchise Football Team! And if the American League won’t let them in - they’ll fall back on their usual method - and bribe there way in. They’ve got form for this sort of thing.

As for septics not understanding football, have you ever looked at any of the threads about septic sports (Netball, rounders, girls rugby etc)? Now they really ARE baffling.

So who’s going to take over at Newcastle? So far it seems to be a race as to who can distance themselves furthest from the post with Bruce, Shearer and McLaren all running a mile. I’d give Gazza the job, on the condition that he did all post match interviews wearing comedy breasts.

Good to see that it looks like Heskey has finally got the heave-ho from england. Now for the Nevilles!

And £25m or there abouts for Rooney (he’s on sixty grans a week apparently). I’m not sure about this. Buy of the century or Lee Sharpe mark 2? Only time will tell.

What was that team in Scotland last year that got about 3 points? Clyde? How are they doing this year?

And finally mycroft He’s niet messiah. He’s een zeer naughty jongen!

Doesn’t even look like Man Utd will even be challenging for the title this season (a little early I know, but 7 points behind Arsenal & Chelsea after 4 games is shocking).

Very pleased with Bolton’s start to the season, and on that note “Oi Newcastle! Hands off our Allardyce”.

Can Arsenal go another full season undefeated? The way they’re playing at the moment the only way they will lose will be if they beat themselves.

Well, personally I’m a Liverpool fan, but they don’t seem to have a chance this year, so pfffffttt! Of the London clubs the Spurs are my favourite, just because Klinsi played there, and I always liked him. Lothar Matthäus on the other hand is a world class prick.

As long as ManU continues to stink up the Premiership I’m at least a little happy. I have a question owlstretchingtime. I know you Spurs fans hate the Gunners, but is the animosity towards Chelsea (I guess they are FilthII) of the same magnitude or is there a difference, and if yes, why?

Oh, and owl: Wij zijn de ploeg van de de barstzelfmoord van Judean People’s Voor! De ploeg van de zelfmoord, aanval!

Man Utd are all over the place - but don’t forget that they’ve got Ferdinand to come back - if he can remember - that’s the equivelent of a £15m signing, and what with the scouse tart-botherer, who knows?

And, unfortunatley for you, Big Sam is the likliest candidate for the fun and games at St Jame’s Park. He does really need a bigger job (sorry). Having said that i think the Newcastle job is about the worst one going. They have a paper thin squad, massive discontent, far too much player power and fans that think they’re a big club (they ain’t, when i was a student at Newcastle I used to go and watch them and they used to get crowds of about 8-10,000. Best fans in the world my arse.)

And God knows who can stop the Goons. If anything, they look better than last year, and that Fibreglass lad looks lively.

Given that he has 5 years to run on his contract, If he did leave for Newcastle, would they have to compensate us? (Not that any amount of money could replace Big Sam)

My money is on Lee Sharpe mark 2. The kid is just not that great a footballer. OK, he scored all those goals in the European Championship, but in my opinion he doesn’t have incredible talent. Plus, with the reputation as a “scouse tart-botherer” he just might end up being the next Gazza or Goergie Best, minus the talent.

What we have with the Goons is rivalry. In fact we rather respect them, and when the tables were the other way round they had a grudging respect for us. It’s just in recent years when the gap has widened to it’s current chasm that things have become rather more bitter.

We live cheek by jowl with the goons (who incidentally have a higher number of jewish fans than we do) and for all but two days a year the rivalry is reasonably good natured.

Having said that; Seven Sisters Road on derby day is no place for the fainthearted!

Which brings us to the two bob, ten billion rouble, cockmongers that are Chelsea. Unlike the goons we HATE Chelsea. There are a few reasons for this.

Firstly as they have no natural rivals (Fulham and QPR don’t count) they adopted us as their hate team. Frankly at the time we couldn’t have cared less. However during the seventies things became very unpleasant.

Spurs (as with the Arse) have a fairly cosmopolitan fan base that reflects where we are based. Black faces were not rare at either the Lane or the Library during the seventies (this is in stark contrast to many other grounds). In fact both AFC and THFC had large all-black firms (from Broadwater Farm) during that time. A strange thing to be proud of - but true nonetheless

Chelsea on the other and became the poster club for the NF, and it was they who introduced the anti-semitic stuff that they still, shamefully indulge in. (someone should tell them that Abramovich is jewish). After that things went from bad to worse. Matchday against CFC in the 70s was probably the most violent place in Nortern Europe. (See the Film “Football Factory” for a fictionalised, but accurate representation of a typical day at the lane with CFC).

During this time CFC were a two bob (literally) club with a slum stadium and a shitty division 2 team.

Their current circumstances have not gone down well in North London. And there is the point that we never, ever, ever beat them. The last winner for THFC against CFC in the league was scored by Gary Lineker.

And Finally: The phrase you put, when reverse Babelfished comes out as:

We are the plough of the barstzelfmoord of Judean People’s for! The plough of the suicide, attack!

I’m is Brian en zo mijn vrouw

An interesting point from our Northern friend here…

Yes they would have to compensate you (there’s almost certianly a buy-out clause in his contract). Probably about £1-2m, so not really adequate.

But, and this is the most important bit, Premiership clubs are forbidden to tap-up other Premiership managers during the season. Newcastle seem to be doing this left right and centre.

I’m suprised Martin O’Neil hasn’t been more strongly mentioned.

Because he’s not going anywhere. It’s going to be Georgie Graham to attempt to get back in the good books and hope everyone forgets about his bung loving habits.

I have a very, very bad feeling about this season. Micky lost it somewhere in the middle of last season, and doesn’t seem to be near finding it. The players need a clue and some motivation. All Micky has to give is despair. You can’t motivate players with despair. I want rid.

Why we didn’t get rid at the end of last season, I do not know.

Mind you, I don’t know who the hell we’d replace him with. We’ve got about 60p to throw around, and it shows.

There’s an article on the BBC website, saying that McClaren and Allardyce are distancing themselves from the Magpies managerial mess.
Whilst we’re talking about new managers, could Sir Clive really be destined for Southampton

£50000 a week for young Rooney then on his signing to Scum. I bet every tupenny whore in England is jumping for joy.

I bet Alan Smith’s pleased at that signing.

I see Leeds campaign is a resounding Meh so far in the champions division 1 league too.

A flying start to the season for us, although the Middlesborough game had me slightly worried for about 2 minutes until Bergkamp worked his magic.

Realistically, our unbeaten run ain’t going to last forever, but as it stands at the moment the only people i can see us losing to are Chelsea.

Rooney isn’t fit to clean Smith’s boots the way Smith’s playing at the moment.

I’m still confused as to why Ferguson wanted Rooney. To my mind it doesn’t make footballing sense.

He’s young and nowhere near a finished article, and is going to be a tricky little bundle to manage - especially when it finally dawns on him that he’s actually going to have to fight for his place in the team now. I give it 6 months before the hissy fits start.

If Ferguson wanted another squad stiker it would, to my mind, have made more sense to sign a veteran on the cheap to fill in every now and again - a Sheringham style figure.

Of course now that i think about it, Man Utd are gonna shift a shitload of Rooney merchandise and media which probably explains it.
