I called the shelter (here in FW) yesterday. Got a list of what they needed and made a quick trip to Target. Took 'em bags of undies, and sleepwear. We’ve agreed to work (entire Pullin family) tomorrow in their warehouse or kitchen (they’re not sure yet, just said they could use some strong backs). MizPullin’s employer is triple-matching all donations, so our cash went there (my employer put up a 7-figure pot, but isn’t matching. Giving our cash donation to MizPullin’s bunch will get more actual money to the victims). I don’t know how to figure the total dollar amount. Call it 300 in round figures (don’t know what our time is worth) MizP’s also trying to round up her cow-orkers for a trip to give blood (no word yet on how that will work out).

To other Canadians - you actually don’t need to give through your bank as the OP did (although there is most emphatically nothing wrong with that method) - the Canadian Red Cross themselves have a nice interface for donating by credit card https://www.paypaq.com/redcross/en/ . I used it after the tsunami.
As to how much I’m giving, I haven’t decided yet. However, I’m heading to the US tomorrow to see Mt. Rushmore and area (I paid quite a few for the tour and flights quite some time ago, so not going in order to conserve gas is not practical). If I happen to see some place to donate a few US to the cause while I’m down there I’ll do so. Yes, I know that means I don’t get to deduct it from my Canadian income tax, but I figure that is probably a more efficient way to get $ directed specifically to that cause.
Between my SO and I:
$80 (in supplies for local shelters, which they were asking for, so I wasn’t just dumping useless stuff on their doorstep)
If anyone happens to notice that a total hasn’t been kept up by any particular post could you please update the correct total? I can’t be here all the time

I can’t really donate money until my loan check shows up, but my station is running public-service announcements encouraging people to donate to the Red Cross.

If you’re giving to a charity you’re not familiar with, you can look at more information about them at several sites:
Charity Navigator
List of Hurricane Katrina Relief Organizations (from Give.org, the Web site of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance; the page also has a link with tips on giving to disaster relief efforts)
Charity Watch’s list of top charities helping Katrina victims
I’m waiting till tomorrow to find out how my church is helping. My employer doesn’t match, unfortunately…
