An Electoral MMP
Tuesday was a pretty relaxing day. Elections can be stressful, but it was clear fairly early on (All hail Nate Silver) that Obama would win with ease. Once Pennsylvania was called, McCain’s chances were remote, and I had won myself a barbeque lunch next 7/4 from my conservative cousin. After Ohio went to Obama, it was all over except the counting. Sure I’m still reloading this page once every 7 minutes or so to see if Al Franken has inched closer, but the question is only how great a day was it, not whether or not it was a good day.
You may think betting on an election is odd, but this isn’t the first time I’ve done it. Of course money is boring prize, so I try to always make it something more interesting. It all started in 2000, when I was a freshman in college. I had made a bet with a guy living down the hall from me in my dorm while returns were starting to trickle in. If Bush won, I would buy him and his companions enough alcohol to get through the weekend. If Gore won he would get boat ride tickets for me and this girl. I watched in the lounge with him and a couple likeminded conservatives while getting some early Mafia practice in on how to argue against the mob.
The night started well enough with Gore winning all the states he needed to win. The girl wandered in, and was highly confused that a bet involving her had been made while she was napping. Gore won Pennsylvania and then Florida, and looked like he had the election sown up. My comrades were getting desperate, loudly cheering on victories in the Dakotas.
But then they took back Florida.
“You can’t take back a state. You gave it to him already” I vainly yelled chucking whatever was closest at the T.V. The rest of the night is kind of a blur. I stayed up well into the night watching Florida go Bush and then back to undecided once more, stopping only when newscaster could no longer make coherent sentences. Actually, that kind of goes for the rest of college too.
The important lesson here is to always vote, for you never know what could be riding on it.
