I’m not following your logic. Zsofia doesn’t have any extra info, so why would her opinion influence your view? Also, we don’t actually know whether she did anything toNight, so it’s too early to praise her work. Save that for when she blocks a Night kill. Or as I said before we can also be sure about her when she protects Hal, and he lets us know that his investigation was blocked. I’m not saying that I don’t believe her role claim. At this point I don’t know. I just don’t want the town to overlook the possibility that she could be scum.
The other person who shouldn’t be overlooked is Darth Sensitive. We don’t really know much about him, so I’ve got a few questions. Darth Sensitive, what is your official role name? I don’t think you’ve weighed in on Zsofia’s claim yet. What do you think about it? Prior to joining the game, did you think anyone else looked scummy besides Hero? With everything that has happened since you unlurked, did you become suspicious of anyone new?
Sorry, I just realized you probably meant Hal and Pleonast, not Zsofia :smack:
If Hal’s lying to us it means that either he made an incredibly shrewd guess on the Moderator/downscow thing, or he’s a scum detective.
It’s difficult to assess the chances of those. (Not to imply, Hal, that your making a shrewd guess is unexpected or implausible.) However, Blaster Master did deduce Pleo’s Vig status. If you assume he’s the Vig, how hard is it to guess his role would be Moderator?
The reason that I’m hesitant is that if I were trying to convince people I had secret knowledge and then mislead them, I’d give them two convincers.

I think it would have been more difficult for scum to guess who had the power role, not what kind of role it is. After all, they knew that they’re not the ones responsible for the second kill. If they figured out that Pleonast is the Vig, guessing that he’s the Moderator wouldn’t be that hard. After all, IRL Moderators are the ones who ban people from the SDMB. Also, there aren’t many other roles left on Og’s list that sound pro-town and fit the rest of the game color.
But how could a scummy Hal have known that Pleonast is the Vig? First, let’s assume he’s not the detective. Scum probably started hunting for the Vig on Night 4, when they killed Kat. Perhaps they thought that Zsofia is a possible Vig, and once she role claimed something else, the scum had it narrowed down to Pleonast. If that’s the case then it doesn’t make sense for Hal to go the risky false role-claim route, rather than simply voting for Pleonast and getting rid of him that way. A lot of people noticed problems with Pleonast’s scoring system, and he didn’t address any of them. It wouldn’t have been that difficult to build a case against Pleonast.
And yet, it was Blaster Master, our only 100% known scum who “protected” Pleonast with his vote for Total Lost in post 1498. (If I’m counting up the votes correctly, prior to that Pleonast and Total Lost were tied with 3 votes each, but I think TL got 3 votes first). By then, we were already in overtime. If the scum suspected that Pleonast was a power role, why didn’t one of them vote to put Pleonast in the lead? We know that at that point 2 out of 3 people voting for Pleonast were town, so it’s not like scum were worried about bunching too many of their votes together.
The same thought process applies to Hal being a scum detective. If the scum knew that Pleonast was the Vig, they wouldn’t have brought it to the town’s attention. Instead, they’d keep quiet and try to get him banned. That’s why I don’t think Hal is scum. I hope that makes sense.
I know I’m going to regret saying anything else in this thread, but I cannot help myself here because you’re thinking about this wrong. I’m going to ask you to be creative for a moment and imagine, just imagine for a second, that you are a Scum detective. What’s your best play? Well, to rack up some investigations and, when the time is right, pretend to be a Town detective, of course.
It makes complete sense for Hal as scum detective (and other scum) to speak up and save Pleonast from lynching because they get a three-fer: 1. Hal gets 99% confirmed after he is revealed upon death to be what Hal said he was (plus any other scum who advocated saving Pleo get some bonus cred); 2. Vig gets killed anyway; 3. they get to play a false investigation and get a Townie lynched and win the game. If they stayed quiet, all they get is a dead Vig.
I know this is not going to change anyone’s vote, but I had to say it anyway.
If scum knew that Pleonast is a Vig, by getting him Day-banned, they would have ended the game (assuming there are 5 of them). Even if Zsofia is really a blocker, it would have been easy for scum to outguess her (by not targeting any of the claimed power roles). Why would scummy Hal bother trying to build long-term trust, when he could have gotten a short-term win?
Simple, ok11, it’s all part of my long-term plan – see, Shadow is my scumbuddy. After I get town to off him, I’m going to go rogue and start trying to be the only scum remaining at the end, coming down to three-handed. Figured it’d be more of a challenge that way.
Either that, or I’ve been on the level and Shadow is trying a last-ditch save to try and get town to knock me off so the scum won’t have to play WIFOM with ZSophia about me tonight.
ahem Do you recall who helpfully calculated the “likely” number of scum for us? You know, the one who convinced us we were in Lylo? What was his name again…
Hal, I liked it better when we were scumbuddies
If there were only 4 scum at the start of the game, then we’ve got another mislynch. So even if you’re town and we ban you, there’s still going to be another Day. Therefore, if you’re really a townie, you’d try to help the rest of us, instead of storming off at the start of the Day. What you’re doing now isn’t helpful. If you want to convince us that there are 4 scum, use JSexton’s formula, and show us that this game setup makes sense with 4 scum.
It didn’t take long Today.
“I found scum last Night!” Hal Briston cried triumphantly. His arm extended, finger pointing clearly in the direction of the accused. “I pit ShadowFacts for he is a Jerk!”
“I? I am a mere Doper! You are a lying scum!” cried ShadowFacts, shaking a fist under Hal’s nose.
“Get the Scum!” cried most of the players with one voice, falling savagely upon ShadowFacts in what would have been a mass Pitting. (Fortunately we’re in the Game Room, so a modicum of civility was enforced.) Amrussell made a plea for objectivity, but it went unheard amid the tumult.
“Fine, I see this is going nowhere.” exclaimed ShadowFacts. “I’m going to leave until you have all come to your senses.”
“Ban him!” the chants grew. Most loudly of all was Storyteller, which was odd since he isn’t playing in this game.
Shadowfacts returned “Hmm that didn’t work. Hal I challenge you to a feud!”
Hal chuckled with glee “You are on. You can’t compete with my knowledge of Popular Trivia.”
The town wrote down answers as Hal and Shadow glared upon each other. Amrussell quickly calculated the scores. Hal was victorious.
“Woohoo!” shouted Hal, as Shadow grabbed the score sheet.
“What?” cried ShadowFacts. “How is Canada City the most popular answer for capital of Canada?”
“You have lost, and now shall suffer an ironic death,” chimed in Ok11, before smashing ShadowFacts with an iron mallet.
The Sun failed early. When the perceptions of the players adjusted themselves to the lesser light they found that ShadowFacts lay entombed at their feet. On the headstone were the words of his epitaph.
**I. Told. You. So.
ShadowFacts, aka Puma, a Member of the SDMB (Town) is dead and buried.**
Two hours for strategy and speculation, then another 46 until Dawn. Get your Night action in before the Dawn or lose it."
ShadowFacts, let Mhaye or I know if you want spoilerage.
Damn it! This probably goes without saying, but there’s no need to protect Hal toNight.
If we somehow make it to Day 7, definitely take a look at Darth Sensitive. He has posted elsewhere on this board, but hasn’t bothered to stop by in this thread all Day. The only player who claimed to have a role that’s not on the list is Nanook, and we all know why he did it. So there’s a definite possibility that Darth is a sock or jerk, or some other role with a negative connatation. As I’ve meta-gamed before (about Nanook), why would Og give an already unusual role an extra burden of having a name that’s not on the list? Besides, compared to back then, now we know a lot of roles and all of them were on the list.
Also, Hero, did you see my question in post 1622?
Damn it! I spent all afternoon at the doctor’s office, come home and sack out, come on to give a close reread and this is what I get. I swear, I am going to snot all over everybody just for revenge.
Thank you guys so much for the mention; that just made my whole day.
Time check.
I’ll have to reply tomorrow Ok11.
Sorry, guys - we got played. Good luck, and GO TOWN!
Hurray!
See! Now you just post things that make you “forgettable” and that’s no way to play for a dead scum
