There’s a reason that “landscape mode” has that name! 
Not being facetious – if you want to illustrate a landscape the way a human perceives it, you typically want a much bigger horizontal component than vertical. Otherwise you’re illustrating something else.
Landscape vs. portrait mode is a subjective decision that, being art and all, generally does not have one right and one wrong answer (although it usually kinda does).
That said, there are rules of thumb that can be used as guidelines. You can crank up the Google Machine to explore photographic composition basics.

We had a mild, wet winter - the Bougainvillea never froze this year, and bloomed all winter.

We have the bougainvillea that will not die. We transplanted it this year and had to use the tractor to pull it out of the ground. Once it begins blooming again, I expect it’ll grow about a foot every week.

We have forsythia like that. Winch it out of the ground, do a sloppy job transplanting it, and it just keeps growing
@zimaane - I was going to enter this photo until I saw yours! I went with something else in the end. I had no idea what these flowers were called, so learned something from your entry as well.

No worries @TwoCarrotSnowman , the purple coneflower is a very photogenic plant. The one you entered instead is great too.
