Ok, I tested the settings modification that should let us play 8 players on a smaller map. So the one city challenge idea is viable. I think it’d be interesting to stick 8 players on a 4 player map, maybe a few city states to fight over. If we did do a one city challenge, would we want to ban nuke usage?
Even if we end up playing a more conventional game though I think we should play on smaller maps, the ones we’ve been playing with 8 players have been too large.
One issue we have to decide on is animations. In general, I like having them on - it gives you a better idea what’s happening to your units, where the attacks are coming from, and gives you a chance to queue some actions so it’s not a total clickfest although the way those queue conflicts are resolved is somewhat mysterious.
On the other hand, the game yanks your vision away from wherever you are to fights you can see even if they don’t involve you. And the aircraft era becomes unbearable because of the ridiculously stupid aircraft animations in this game. On the other hand, without those animations you’d just see your units disappearing and not know where it was coming from, so I don’t know. Tough call.
We didn’t start a new game Thursday, too few people were around. We should have a bigger turnout Tuesday, where we’ll start our next game. Looks like some people are interested in doing the one city challenge on a smaller map - it may be a game we can go through in 2 sessions. Worth trying I think.
I think that I have all the DLC for the game now. I would be willing to try a multiplayer game if timing and turnout works.
New game starting today (Tuesday) at 7:30/4:30. Possibly the one city challenge on a smaller map. Trying to get 8 people together. Should move along smoothly.

I thought the one city challenge nature of this game would mean it finished in 2 days, but we’ve had a lot of combat. I also didn’t correctly anticipate how big a 4 player map was - I was hoping we’d be more cramped.
But I forgot about something - we have SDMB fantasy football leagues scheduled for a draft this Tuesday and Thursday, so I can’t make the normal days. So you can either play with out me, or we can switch to finishing this game off Monday or Wednesday at the normal time. Monday would be fine with me - can everyone make that?
If all the people who are around except those who missed Thursday (and feel free to come back if you want, but once you’ve missed a game I’m not counting on you) tonight at the normal time, we’ll finish up our OCC game. If not, you guys can either play without me tomorrow or we can do it Wednesday.
If everyone from the Monday game is around today, I’d like to continue/finish our game. Another SDMB FF draft on Thursday, so can’t do it then.
My gaming laptop is in the shop for a new fan. I’ll be out of gaming, specifically our Civ game, for couple of weeks. I guess this means that Thebes, capital of Egypt, holy city for Tablemania, chock-full of wonders, is up for grabs.
