Sorry about that, my power went out almost exactly the time the game was scheduled. Weird, too, since Vegas has really stable power - my total power outage time in the last 7 years has been like… 2 minutes total.
Anyway, I’m going to ask people around to figure out if there’s a time on the weekend we can get this game started, but if that doesn’t work out, we’ll get started on Tuesday at 7:30ish pacific, what would’ve been our 2nd session.
I would love to join in on this - except being in the UK would mean i was playing at 3am. If anyone wants to start a earlier game give me a shout though.
We tried playing with 11 players. The game warned us that it was an unsupported number of players. Apparently the game engine starts falling apart above 8. It was a laggy mess with various people getting disconnected and being unable to reconnect properly. There’s a chance that one person in the game was having issues and slowing the whole thing down, but apparently the civ forums say that once you get above 8 players the game gets squirrely. So I guess 8 players will be our maximum from here on out.
We gave it a try for about an hour and a half before we gave up. We decided to split up into two 6 player games. The people who were still going to be around for a while started theirs, and the rest planned to get back together Thursday. So we’ll have the two games running in parallel. Since the second game won’t be starting for another hour or so, you can do some last minute recruiting if you want.
Alright, so the 8 man game we started Thursday is now the main Tuesday-Thursday game, so be there today. The 6 man game we started Tuesday will be played whenever everyone is around.
At the risk of having this thread moved to GD, I just want to point out that AIDS is good, mmmm k? AIDS is what binds us together as a society.
In contrast, what does Black Jesus give you? FALSE hope, that’s what.
And I quote, from the great book of AIDS, Harry, chapter 2, verse 78: “And ye shall beware of false Prophets, for they are like wolves who come to you in lambs’ clothing, and glittering pop star accoutrements”.
Clearly the only True religion is Discrimination2!. Unlike most sequels, this one is actually BETTER than the original. And why would there be an exclamation mark at the end if it was not a great religion?
Zohan ended up taking advantage of Terminus being gone and rolled over the AI. He worked around the capital and let me end up taking that to keep things peaceful/non-threatning with us.
I don’t even remember enough to recap what happened Tuesday, there were so many twists and turns. Gaga, Kinthalis, and Torus attacked toast because as usual he’s way ahead in science despite only having two cities. Gaga didn’t send enough infantry and while he got the city down to almost no health, ultimately failed to take Moscow. Toast had artillery defending against cannons.
After that, Gaga’s attack petered out and he easily shrugged off the rest of the Torus/Kinthalis low tech attack.
Zohan threatened Gaga to leave toast alone, I guess fearing that Gaga would become too powerful with Moscow. War was declared. Gaga decided to leave Toast alone at this point and offered him a peace treaty. There was some dispute about who was telling the truth, but apparently Gaga snuck in a requirement for Toast to declare war on Zohan as part of the peace treaty. It’s plausible that Toast didn’t notice this at the time, but Zohan swore vengeance.
Gaga ended up sending an expedition towards Zohan’s territory but it was absolutely destroyed by ships of the line from Zohan’s navy.
Res basically just spent the whole game giving money to everyone. I guess he wants to keep everyone appeased so he can carve out a meager existence on his ridiculously good terrain.
Yeah, in the future I guess we should put our difficulty on at least king to prevent an easy rollover of the AI. I’ll also have to try harder to get fill in players.
The 8 man game will continue and probably finish tonight. We may start another one tonight or a new one may start Thursday. Does anyone have anything they wanted to try, like perhaps play a game with only one type of victory condition or something?
I’d like to point out that no one actually saw what truly happened in the end.
Sure, Beef launched he’s stupid shuttle and credits rolled, but what you didn’t see was how my now expansive empire (thanks to Carthage’s generous territorial gifts) had locked on said shuttle and blew it out of the sky.
Actually, I think what this game needs (besides the surgical extraction of all aerial craft animations) is a Dota 2 -like ending sequence.
The end should have been punctuated by a short cut scene of Beef’s shuttle taking off. Or a world congress cheering as Res is voted king of the world, etc.
Something a little more lively than a summary screen.
One city challenge can be interesting and quick, but here’s the problem in MP.
You need a certain minimum map size to hold a certain number of players. As far as I can tell, you can’t cram more players than the map size allows onto the map. For 8 players, we need to play a large map, there’s no way to put 8 players on a smaller map. The map size doesn’t scale with 1 city challenge, which would mean that we’d all have our cities spread pretty far apart. There’d be little contact and combat.
Now if we could take 8 people with a one city challenge and cram them onto a smaller map, it’d definitely be interesting - you could invade other people’s capitals and knock them out of the game, war would be very dangerous - but that’s not how it would play out if we were all hugely spread out.
Maybe there’s some sort of fix to this but I doubt it.
So there’s an xml file you can edit to change the number of players allowable for map sizes, and the forums suggest that just having the host make this modification will work for multiplayer games, so we can test it out tomorrow. I’d definitely like smaller maps than the ones we’ve been playing on.
One city challenge on a small map would be interesting because you’d have to make very important strategic decisions about the value of science/culture/military. You could go gung ho for a cultural victory, but then someone with a large military can eliminate you from the game just by taking one city. Wars would be interesting. But because the attacking side also only has one city, they couldn’t pop up an army instantly out of nowhere - scouting them should give you a warning as to their militarization.
Of course the luck of the draw would be a huge factor, the starting terrain of your capital would have a huge influence on how the game went for you.
Still, I think it’d be a fun and pretty quick game to try. So if you guys are interested we can do an 8 man one city challenge on a 4 player map. Otherwise I’m open to suggestion.
