Read the registration agreement. If you don’t follow it, and you don’t heed warnings, then you WILL get banned. I ban spammers on sight, along with returning trolls. Yes, I have some interesting stories about banned members, but no, I’m not going to post them in public.

Out of curiosity, how do you identify returning trolls?

Do you only prowl certain forums? Cause I’ve seen some spammers that lasted two or three days before.

Pretty much, yeah. In my case, C. K. Dexter Haven and TubaDiva are senior to me, so I answer to three people. We almost NEVER hear directly from the bosses at the ChiReader. Ed’s the one who gets to tell the rest of us what the head honchos have decided, and he’s the one we all gripe to.

We will also cooperate with the staff of other message boards as problems come up. For instance, I can think of one time when a member of this board wrote to several admins, asking a question about how to do something on HIS vBulletin board. We gave him what advice we could. This is all extremely unofficial, of course, but it still works. Sometimes Una Persson will answer a question in ATMB, because she knows the software answers, and she also knows the rules and regulations of the SDMB quite well. So even though she’s not an official mod here, she’s quite helpful. OpalCat has given us some valuable tips on how to run this message board, too. I believe that she’s the one who came up with the “Quick Reply” box hack, which is one of the very few modifications that we used in the previous version of this software. I know that LOTS of people liked that modification, and I’ll be glad when we can get around to putting it back in.

Oh, and in the official hierarchy…I am the person in charge of biting people who need it. I’m good at it, and that’s the main reason they keep me around.

Oh, and I guess that you must get a lot of travel time in going all around the country…actually, all around the world going from doper house to doper house to do all the biting huh?

Based on my own lack of teeth marks, I can’t say the travel is that extensive. I mean, dammit, what’s a guy got to do to get bitten around here? Huh?

To answer your first question, I won’t. We prefer to not reveal our methods—and there are several. Although anyone with a modicum of understanding of the workings of the Internet likely know what these techniques may be, we prefer to not advertise them. In fact, you may have even seen locks placed on a few threads discussing these mechanisms.

Second question. While all of the staff has the permission level necessary to act in any forum to kill spammers, we frequently do not have time to do much more than monitor our assigned area. If you see spam that’s lingered for while, please use the report post function. That utility notifies all moderators assigned to whatever forum in which the offending post resides. Additionally, you may e-mail any or all of the administrators and or any moderator you wish. What we’d prefer you not do, is post to the thread as there’s no need to give Spam any unnecessary exposure. And by all means, don’t click a Spammer’s link. They have means of tracking the source of responses to their Spam; these are called “referrals.” If Spammers find that they get many referral from this site, it will only encourage additional Spam.

The Staff is coordinated by C K Dexter Haven (a job rather akin to herding cats, I think), who reports to Ed, who reports to Cecil .

My own official Staff title is Straight Dope Curator of All that Walks, Crawls, or Flaps, aka Straight Dope Curator of Critters.

I could be “Pint-sized Poobah.” Lord knows I’ve got the pint-sized part down.
