SDMB Shadowrun Campaign chapter 2: Golden Rule - players only!

The shaman responds, “No assurance will be given. All that matters is we have an agreement with Universal Omnitech. It will be honored, or the Chinook will enforce it. Universal Omnitech knows better than to breach a contract with us.”

Donovan responds via comlink, “If one of you doesn’t put a bullet in Johnson’s head, I’ll go up there and do it myself. We didn’t come this far just to change the name on a manager’s office door. Get it done!”

Just so you know, I have not forgotten about this instruction. Seneth will cast Detect Enemies as they approach the service hallway, after the current discussion is resolved.

Nail facepalms out of frustration. “Complications. Always complications. Why can’t anything ever be easy?” Nail mutters. Looking down, all he can see is Seneth’s mage-y wardrobe. Suddenly, his face perks up ever so slightly from its previous sullen-ness.

He stands up quiet suddenly for his typical laxness. Turning to Goethe and speaking only to Goethe and Seneth, he says: “Goethe, while I have a hunch this Johnson guy’s goose is cooked, if anyone is going to take him out, it shouldn’t be us. For starters, whoever murders him is going to have the Chinook on their ass. I have a plan that would at least let the chump survive the initial firefight.”

Nail continues on to explain: “Seneth, I’ve seen you summon some pretty crazy stuff. Is there any way you can summon some kind of earth elemental that I could use as armor? Something I could even… wear? Because I still have this bad boy.” He pulls out the syringe he received from Chaggo earlier. “Chaggo wanted me to use this on Johnson. I just need a way to get in and out without getting blown to bits by Sir Kills-a-lot and his band of merry men.”

Nail had received the syringe from 4509.

Ah, I had an inkling I might have misremembered that. Well, in that case, please disregard the two sentences regarding who Nail got the syringe from.

Remind me(us) what the syringe does.

To Seneth and Nail:

“I’m actually in favor of Johnson being whacked, and I’m happy to let 4509 and his band take the blame for it. After all, UO has said that it’s this infiltration team’s call on whether Johnson lives or dies anyway. If they’re willing to risk pissing off the Chinook, let them. But you’re right, I don’t want the Chinook getting pissed off at us three because Rambo over there got all trigger happy. And I can sympathize with Donovan’s plight at wanting to see Johnson dead as well. So I say we let the chips fall where they may, and let UO and the Chinook deal with their own issues from whatever fallout results from this. We were hired to take Johnson and Synthcorp down, and we will fulfill our contract as far as that goes. The rest isn’t our concern. However, I think we should inform our Chinook friends that we three will try to spare Johnson if we can, but we can’t make any promises about the UO guys. After all, we’re just freelancers with a minor personal stake. I’ll leave that part to you, Nail, since you’re much better at getting people to like you than I am.”

To 4509 over the commlink:

“So, 4509. What exactly is your beef with Johnson, if you don’t mind me asking. Your boss doesn’t care what happens to him, the Chinook want him alive, so why do you want him dead? Understand, I’m mostly ambivalent about all this, but I lean towards taking him out since it guarantees he’s out of my life, but whether Johnson lives or dies doesn’t have any effect on fulfillment of contract for Nail, Seneth, and I getting paid.”

From what I remember, the syringe was gifted as a type of sleep or paralysis agent, not sure which.

Back in game, Nail gives Goethe a side-long look. Reluctantly, he messages the Chinook. “Roger that, Chinook Nation. I give you my word my crew will honor the contract we were given. Johnson will not fall by our hands.”

He next messages Goethe privately. “There, happy? That should get them off our backs at least.”

It’s Narcoject, which is a knockout agent, but 4509 never told Nail that.

“You ever stop talking?” 4509 takes position at one of the doors, pistols ready to go.

To 4509:

“Only when I’m shooting things, and then frequently not even then. I don’t talk in my sleep either, at least, not that I’ve ever been told. Anyway, if you don’t want to discuss it, that’s fine. I was just curious is all.”

To everyone else:

“Let’s do this then.”

Seneth responds immediately to this line, aggressively pushing.

"It is NOT open for discussion. Let me make this perfectly clear:

We should defeat him utterly, leave him and all he’s worked for broken, wrecked, exposed, and on display for all to see. But we don’t kill him. That is too simple for such a man."

The group has plenty of time to prepare for their assault. 4509 has ordered the three remaining UO agents to the access door for 3 of the 4 suites, while 4509 himself takes a position at the 4th door. All four soldiers are prepared to use a flashbang grenade as they enter.

Seneth’s detect enemies spell has a wide enough radius to cover the area. There are 10 total people who intend to do harm to Seneth nearby. His spell is not able to determine their location, beyond the knowledge that they are within the spell’s considerable radius.

The four access doors correspond roughly to points of the compass, north/south/west/east. 4509 is stationed at the south entrance. There are 5 total Chinook remaining, 1 of which is a shaman of moderate power.

The shaman looks to Goethe for guidance. “Shall we spread our power evenly, or show great force at a single entrance?”

Nail lights a cig and remarks on 45 and Goethe’s banter: “He talks in his sleep too.”

Regarding the syringe, it was implied to be non-lethal, or at least Nail thought so. Why go through the trouble of injecting someone to kill them when shooting them is so much easier?

I just meant that Nail wasn’t told what drug in particular it is, in case later on he uses it and says to the others: “Looks like Johnson’s overdosed on Narcoject. Celebrities never can stay away from the stuff.”

I’ll keep that one-liner in mind ;).

In response to Nail’s comment on Goethe talking in his sleep:

“Before you guys get any funny ideas into your heads, Nail and I have run together plenty of times and you frequently find yourself taking a nap whenever you can get one, since sleep ends up being a luxury. Nail and I are purely platonic. Really.”

To the Shaman:

"I think your group should split up. We want to have a fairly balanced approach from all sides since we don’t quite know where the enemies are.

"I propose that Seneth and one of the Chinook accompany the cyborg at the south entrance.

“Nail, you take one of the Chinook warriors to the east entrance and join the UO guy there. Two more of the Chinook warriors should go to the west entrance with that UO guy. And the shaman and I will approach from the north entrance with the one statoned there. Everybody keep your commlinks on and active.”

I meant for Seneth to answer this earlier, so insert this post back up where he asked it.

“Not something you could wear, my child, but I could summon something and order it to protect you. If your syringe incapacitates and does not kill, I would offer my abilities to you to ensure that you are successful.”

I will update the game soon, but for now I just wanted to say I think it’s awesome that Goethe is trying to convince everyone he’s not gay for Nail, while you’re all preparing for the battle of your lives.

Goethe’s chatter about his firmly straight status lightens up Nail’s mood, providing a warm respite from the bloodshed before and the carnage to come. “Yeah, and no offense Goethe, but you’re not really in my league,” he remarks.

A few minutes prior, Nail is having a small conversation with Seneth. Twirling the syringe in his fingers like a cigarette, he says: “Yeah, I’m certain it will just knock him out.” Nail doesn’t know what it’s in the syringe, but he trusts his feelings strongly enough for his reply to not really be a lie. “I look forward to benefiting from your prodigious assistance,” he says with a flattering but not perfectly sincere tone of voice.

The team is organized roughly evenly among the four entrances. 4509 is standing at the south entrance, alongside two Chinook warriors. 4509 can’t help but notice one of the Chinook eyeing him with suspicious recognition, but the Native wisely says nothing to him.

Seneth lays a hand on Nail’s shoulder, and looks in his eye. “Wise master watches you,” Seneth says almost under his breath. It is not his voice that says the words, but a much stronger force within him. Nail feels a sudden moment of panic as a foreign, cynical entity embraces him. The feeling stops abruptly as the sound of flapping wings fades in his ears. Seneth nods with satisfaction and walks toward the west doorway, where he meets with a UO agent and a Chinook warrior.

Nail stays at the east doorway, where a UO agent and two Chinook are ready to enter.

Goethe stands at the north doorway with the Chinook shaman and a UO agent.

“Are you prepared?” The shaman says to Goethe. “Make peace with the spirits, shall fortune not favor us.”
