I’ve had it! Yet another thread on how slow the Dope is. I don’t know how many there have been,(I’m not looking them up and I don’t want to single out any one thread.)but this has been done to death. The Dope is not getting faster in the near future so get used to it. If it’s too slow for you ,leave. I’ll stick around because this is the best place to be. Maybe to you it’s just a slow board but I come here,not just for the vast wealth of information but for the community of this place. I see posts running the gamut of the most mundane imaginable to the most triumphant to the most tragic.Posts inviting any Doper in the neighborhood to stop by to celebrate a holiday. Posts announcing the birth of a child or the death of a loved one. I see so many times a Doper coming to these boards for support in a difficult time and we respond magnificently. It’s the feeling of family in here that keeps me coming back.So,if you think it’s too slow,leave and it will be that much faster for the rest of us.

Absolutely. Why propose positive alternatives or take any other steps that might make things better?
The sad fact is that what you asked for has happened. Who left? Well, that’s not really possible to count, since their packets were turned away and they left in disgust. Those that have stayed have posted fewer things than they would’ve had there been reasonable performance, so in a sense everybody’s taken your advice and used it less.

Its not the slowness that bothers me. Its the fact that at certain times of the day I cannot get any connection at all. And all the eaten posts I’ve had. That bothers me the most.
There is a difference between slow and traffic jam.
You know, I almost never have these problems. The board may not always respond quickly but it DOES respond for me.
Maybe it’s broadband? I’ve got huge pipes at both work and home.

Sounds good to me. Now if people would only realize the irony of clogging up the system with their threads about how clogged up the system is, we’ll be alright.
I hardly ever have problems with speed. Of course, I’ve got dsl at home and work and hardly ever try to post at peak times. In fact, right now, at about 9 am, it’s rather fast.
It’s mostly new people who post threads about the board being slow. And there’s nothing you can do to stop people from doing stuff once.
There’s about 3 times a day that I know the board won’t be running. I avoid the boards at those times. I actually use that time to catch up on some reading, watch a little TV, maybe go out with some friends.
It really cuts down on the overwhelming urge to throw the computer out the window.
It’s aggravating, but the board is worth it.
Just curious, though, is it slow because there are so many users? If so, is there a way to make it faster?
I know that Something Awful forums charge $10. I know that many people wouldn’t be willing to pay to come here, but it works for SA.
Granted, I enjoy these forums immensely more than the SA forums.
Or, in my case, to do some work. 
I find certain times slower than other and I get page not found errors. When that happens, I say, “Oh Well” and find something else to do. It helps though that I generally have little intresting to add. But sometimes I can’t even browse the forums.
I think charging is a bad idea. Let’s get some ads and popups in here! (sarcasm)

The OP says it is a feeling of family around here, but yet he averages less than one post a week, and he wastes it complaining about the complainers, saying he has had it and they should just leave. So this will be your post for this week, eh? That was a good comment by gum about doing searches. The OP also says The Dope is not getting faster in the near future so get used to it. Well, I really don’t know what the straight dope is with the speed issues at Straight Dope. When I was able to get to the FAQ files, which they have in three or four different locations, and most not addressing the speed issue, but that particular link does, and it seems to contradict itself. What do they intend to do about it? According to the link if you read the OP and scroll down to the 4-02-2002 10:28AM post by the administrator I provided, it says financially they don’t make that much money from SD, and besides when they have fixed the problem in the past, it only brought in more users, and clogged up the system again very shortly thereafter. They say they are a victim of their own success. But it also said to be patient and that they were working on solutions to the problem. That was written over a year and a half ago.

I sometimes have time connecting, but I copy every post I try to make so I can resubmit it if it doesn’t take. If I can’t get to the board at all, I go to another part of the Intarweb. There are a lot of other sites out there to surf in the meantime, it seems.
Leave the General Questions section open to all. Charge for the other forums. Is it that fucking hard? This website has been ridiculously slow for too long.
