SDMB tradition - my colonoscopy thread

My roommate and I have had the same experience, as has my daughter and her family who live in the same town as I do. Both of us now use contactless ordering and pickup which is usually slightly more successful than :truck:. Inevitably things are left out or the wrong thing gets packed but they always refund the money when it is wrong so we’ll learned to live wit so we dont have to shop in person. My daughter has severe Celiac disease and also needs low FODMOP foods so some shelf stable foodstuff she just orders from Amazon well ahead of time. She isnt as constrained by finances as I am fortunately. I couldn’t afford to buy an entire diet of gluten free foods. She finds GF pastries and breads to be the hardest to reliably find and that is what she misses the most. As a result she bakes a lot from scratch. Fortunately she enjoys it.Pictures you post of your cookies always remind me of her cookies.

Yes, I recently learned how to make cookies with gluten-free flour.

I do have a good gluten-free bakery in my area that delivers (through mail) though I haven’t ordered from them in a while. I think I felt a bit bad after the last time I ordered from them and accidentally left the food out too long and it wasn’t so good. But that was my fault, and I would like to go back to ordering from them. (I don’t use Amazon.)

Okay, awkward disgusting question, but: if the solution makes me vomit, is that bad?

Yes. You need to get that fluid into gut. Try smaller glasses of it but more often if you keep vomiting it you should call the pharmacy that provided it and ask to speak with the pharmacist on duty and ask him/her what you should do. The scope doctor might be able to give you a prescription of an anti-emetic to help you keep it down so it can flush out your small and large colon. So try calling that pharmacy before they close for the day.

And stop moving around cleaning etc, til your tummy settles. Breathing out through your nose or through pursed lips may help also. Warming the liquid and stippling slowly may help-depends on your tummy. Not tea hot but pleasantly warm.

I loved the low-fiber foods I had to eat. Normally, EVERYthing I eat is full of fiber. But for a couple of days, I ate donuts and ice cream… hey, it’s for medical reasons!

This was back in early January. NOW my problem is that I was told the colonoscopy would be totally covered. But then got a bill saying it cost $1500 with “my portion” of almost $600!

Called the insurance company who said “Oh, your hospital was supposed to code it as a Screening Colonoscopy and they didn’t. Well, we’ll TRY to get them to recode it, but if not, you’ll be liable… and this might take two weeks.”

And surprise, the next day they added a second colonoscopy bill, $1900, with my part over $700… so they say I owe $1300 now!

Pray for my patience (and my bank account)…

I… am not sure I was aware things were supposed to be low-fibre? But I mostly ate things like rice in the past few days. No high-fibre fruits/vegetables.

Sorry about the expenses, digs. Hoping it can be sorted out.

Keep on drinking. At this point I stuck to iced water - there is a risk of being dehydrated as your bowels clear.

What you need is that when you get up off the toilet, what you passed is clear.

My problem was not so much the taste, although I did put lime in it, but simply forcing down four litres of liquid in as many hours. I didn’t feel hungry although I did enjoy the tea and ginger biscuits after.

I’m having my first glass of The Solution. I don’t mind the taste, though the thick texture is a bit weird.

I had laid in a stock of lemon jello, canned chicken broth, and Gatorade. Following some advice I saw posted here, I used a straw to drink the icky stuff, and placed the straw tip way back on my tongue, so that my tastebuds were bypassed. It helped a lot.

I was also grateful for keeping some wet buttwipes on hand. Too many passes with plain toilet paper would have gotten pretty painful by the end of the day.

My gastroenterologist said it would be fine for me to drink Ensure during the prep day. I was surprised - I had heard that everything you drank had to be clear. But I went and bought some vanilla Ensure (ick), and that kept me from feeling starving during the prep day.

My husband drove me to the procedure, and I sternly instructed him to go out and get me a triple espresso so that I could drink it right afterwards. I drank it in the wheelchair that they used to push me out to the car. I had a hunger/caffeine withdrawal headache, and that espresso saved my life. We drove straight to a pho cafe and I had a comforting bowl of rice noodle pho, then went home to sleep for a couple of hours. All checked out okay. But I’m still doing Cologuard the next time.

I had my first just over two weeks ago, I went with the low volume Pico Salax and it was much better than expected compared to having to drink 4 litres of the PEG based stuff. I am a fellow IBS sufferer, so maybe I was used to the long periods on the toilet and the cramping.

I went for jello, Gatorade, ginger ale, and chicken broth.

Waiting for pathology on the single polyp they removed, but likely I’m good for 5 years. Hope it goes well tomorrow!

Too bad I didn’t know about the Ensure. I usually drink that.

I usually drink coffee every day, but I weaned myself off it recently for the procedure.

Not all doctors or prep regimens allow for Ensure. There is a special clear Ensure that is allowed in some prep regimes. I think it is a mixed berry flavor. It does have some grams of protein which would help with satiation and hunger. It’s a specialty product but all drugstores carry it and many larger groceries that have a health food section or in-store pharmacy would have it.

In US Walmarts and Walgreens, and others carry it. Can also be ordered through Amazon but I’m sure many stores in Montreal would carry it. In the US it is about 8 US dollars for 4 single serving bottles.

Ah well. A bit late for that, but I could ask about it next time.

The solution is producing results!
Okay, that was a bit TMI.

Uuurrrgghhh, coding. Not straightening it out would be fraud if that’s indeed what was done. Keep us posted.

One of my college roommates said that if she ever needed to do a bowel clean-out, apple juice alone would work for her! She found out the hard way that drinking more than a sip would cause near-instant purging. Ugh!

That’s what you want. Let’s just hope it keeps coming out that end, and do stay hydrated.

I was just in a certain room for a while.

Now it’s almost time to drink the rest of the solution.

Is it okay to use, um, hemorrhoid cream?

Gin?

Around here the Super Walmart always has both, as well as mixes. Other supermarkets usually have bread.

My prep solution had almost no effect the day before…

… until 2 am.

Luckily, I had time to grab slippers and a book. I was sitting for an hour.

As far as I know, but just a thick lotion to soothe it would be as good. Poor little bum is chapped. Pat gently with TP. Consider using water dampened paper towel to gently cleanse. Keep telling yourself “this too shall pass”. Ok, that was juvenile of me, but I couldn’t resist.

I’ve never heard of any problem with gin. It’s definitely clear. No squeeze of lime though-pulp and all, dontja know.

She does use a lot of their stuff, but she also needs a low FODMAP diet, which complicates which gluten free foods she can sub in. She’s definitely learned her way around on-line groceries ordering. The months when she can go to out local big farmer’s market are her easiest, favorite food months.

I finished all the solution.
How should I say this? Things seem to be running pretty clear now.
Well, gotta go back to a certain room now.
