I started back at Weight Watchers this morning. It was very scary facing the scale…I had put back on all the weight I had lost over the last three years.
So, here I am again…at 203.2 pounds. Eek!

No weight loss this week which is a bit sad, but then I didn’t get to exercise as much as I wanted to (and I ate out on Wednesday and had a seriously naughty dessert). Next week will be much better.
I’m getting frustrated with my scale–it can vary in a single day by as much as 3 lbs. I also know I am losing body fat, but the body fat percentage hasn’t budged by more than 1 or 2%. I keep getting inconsistent readings–it’s driving me nuts. I’m going to start weighing myself once a week and no more because I’m going insane watching the numbers bounce up and down for no discernible reason.
In January/February at my last doctor visit I weighed 185.
When I bought the scale one month ago, I weighed in the 173-175 range with 42% body fat.
Now I weigh in the 167-170lb range with 38-41% body fat. I seem to have slipped from the obese range to the overweight range, which is a good thing, but I’m frustrated with the inconsistency of the results I’m getting.
I’ve been running 3-4x a week, eating excellently well and doing strength training, so I must be losing body fat. My overall weight loss in one month is between 3 and 8 lbs and 1-3% body fat. My first 5K race is on the 4th of July and I just started a Spring Training schedule to get me up to 6 miles PR for distance by the end of the next two months.
Oh, and since I’m here, can I just make a shout-out to the greatest exercise-related discovery I think I’ve ever made in my life? It’s a sports bra for women with large breasts, and it’s called Enell, and it’s AMAZING. They have a website. www.enell.com. Go find it and get yourself one, if you’re anything like me and have trouble finding supportive sports bras.
They custom make them too if they don’t have your size. These are also gorgeous bras and eventually when I lose enough weight I’ll feel comfortable running in one without a shirt. They are modest and attractive.
I learned an important lesson yesterday. I went to Macaroni Grill with a friend and I did the good thing, got the ‘‘skinny chicken’’ with steamed broccoli and a water, and mozzarella/tomato caprese salad. I was doing so well, but I didn’t have the patience to listen to my body. Normally I can’t even finish a meal much less dessert, but that day I felt famished and rushed into dessert. I ate caramel fudge cheesecake, and though it was to die for, I got sick immediately afterwards from overeating and the sugar rush. Next time I think I’m still hungry, I’m going to commit to waiting 5 minutes. If I had waited 5 minutes I would have realized I was full.
Why don’t you buy a new scale? We have one with a digital readout, and it’s in line with the one my doctor’s office uses.
Also, I do agree that weighing yourself more than once a week is pointless. Your body is naturally going to fluctuate throughout the day. Once a week, naked, in the morning before you eat. Measuring yourself is also a good way to keep track.
The five minute rule is a good idea. Because I’ve been using SparkPeople, I haven’t been overeating because 1)I keep track of my calories and 2)Sometimes I don’t want to hop back on the computer, log in, and add the extra food I’ve eaten. So, it’s easy to say “no thank you.”
Week #3 weigh in, 173.8. 1.6 pounds lost this week, and a total of over 6 since June 1. This next week might not be as good, I had LASIK yesterday in one eye and they discourage strenuous activity for a week. (sweat in the eye could cause problems until it heals)
Certainly I could buy a new scale, but this IS a new scale, and it’s supposed to be on of the better ones. I’m going to put it away all week and just do it once a week as you suggest, and we’ll see if that helps my frustration.
I can do so well with the way I eat until I go out for dinner. It’s one of my favorite things to do but it is increasingly becoming less fun because I realize how out of control I am of what other people put into my food. Macaroni Grill does not offer nutrition info but I found some anyway, and one of their entrees labled ‘‘healthy fare’’, their simple salmon, is indeed only 590 calories… and 60 grams of fat! (fortunately what I ate was actually pretty healthy, minus the um, cheesecake.) I find this really outrageous and actually unethical. It’s just so much easier to avoid the frustration of, ‘‘I THINK this is okay for me, but I don’t really know…’’ and cook food at home for myself. That way I know exactly what’s going in.
Eating out is tough. I’m finding that although a lot of restaurants make their nutrition info available online, a lot don’t (Cracker Barrel and Gator’s Dockside, to name two. I make a point of firing off an e-mail, asking them when their nutrition info will be available.) I know that Red Lobster has a Lighthouse menu of healthier options. Try to find the info online before you go out, that way you’ll know what to order once you get there.
Next time you go out to eat, try this: Eat just half of what you order. Page 2 of this article has the menu watchwords to look for when ordering. As for desserts, you can split one with the Mister. I stock up at home with a lot of low-calorie desserts. Hostess makes nice little 100-calorie pack chocolate cakes and carrot cakes, and Jello has sugar-free chocolate pudding at only 60 calories.
Once again, looks like it was water retention last week (party grub and beer must do that to me, I guess). 198½, down 5½ pounds from last week, 45 on the year, and 89½ since starting out. And another landmark, dipping below 200 pounds for the first time in thirty years - and, looking up, I see I’ve finally lost more this year than I did last.
By now most people round here know I have lost loads of weight, but I still keep meeting one or two to whom it’s news.
**Malacandra **- how the hell do you do it? You’ve lost more than twice what I have since the start of the year, it’s seriously impressive.
Well, shows what I know. According to the WW scales I’ve lost another 1.5lb, which takes me up to 21lb lost in total since January. Was pretty chuffed and it meant that I got my 10% weight loss key ring (although I should have got it last week as my 10% was 19lb).
Next stop - target weight!
Serious portion control, and exercise. It’s not a massive rate of loss - averaging 1.8 pounds a week, which has been consistently less than 1% of my bodyweight - but it’s sticking to it that does it. Measuring out the breakfast cereal helps; it’s easy to eat twice the recommended helping if I don’t. And if I have a McLunch for any reason, that’s my main meal of the day. All the savoury snacks that used to be my downfall have gone, and I don’t keep 'em in the house, so barring the occasional extra-mural munchie session (and they’re rare), I’m keeping from eating anything but fruit between meals. Getting into a routine of small portions, healthy food, no snacking, and plenty of walking.
I’ve had a couple of big losses lately, but they’ve been after retrograde weeks caused by my birthday party and someone else’s so in actual fact it’s been more a case of losing a couple of pounds over a couple of weeks, net.
It’s sticking to it that does it - I’ve certainly never managed to keep going for nine months at a stretch before. But as it’s felt like I’ve been “winning” all this time, it’s not been too hard. Why last September should have been the point at which everything clicked, and not at any other time in the last however-many years… well, that I’m at a loss to explain.
Well, a week on vacation in Florida can’t have done my diet any good, and I’m sure I’ll be bitching about it on the first of the month (my loss is so very slow that I count only the first weigh in of the month), but I had a good time.
It’s been a long time since I posted in one of these; I used to be a ringleader.
Backstory: I had a gastric bypass 3 years ago, and lost 130 lbs. I also got out of my routine, and gained a bit of weight back.
After a couple of butt-chewings by the doctors, I rejoined the Y in January and started working out again. Finally, in May, I detected a definite trend down.
As of today:
Highest weight ever: 350
At surgery 06/06/05: 345
Lowest post-op: 222
Highest post-op: 249
This morning: 241
Ultimate goal weight: 199.5
Livable goal: 210
I attribute the loss to a low carb diet, moderate weight lifting, and riding the stuffings out of a virtual reality stationary bike.
I haven’t weighed myself in a long, long time but I must be about 380 maybe even 400lbs. I need to lose weight terribly so have embarked on trying to. I have an exercise bike and will be cutting out junk food and alcohol if at all possible for the foreseeable future.
Hi, my name is MsWhatsit, and you may remember me from such previous threads as “SDMB Weight Loss Club, February 2008”. In other words, it’s been a while since I posted, and I kind of fell off the wagon for much of the spring and early summer.
However. We went on a beach vacation in early June, and I came back five pounds heavier than I started. This finally gave me the kick in the pants I needed to get back on track. I have restarted the South Beach Diet (I’m on the second week of Phase 1) and am getting regular exercise. So far I have lost the 5 lb I gained on vacation plus an additional 2 lb. Which seems like a lot, but I know that for some reason you tend to lose weight a lot more quickly in the first couple weeks of a new diet/exercise regime.
Anyway, MrWhatsit is being very supportive, and I’m doing pretty well with the diet. I need to figure out some SBD-friendly snacks to keep around the house for when the midafternoon munchies hit, though.
My primary goal is to be back in a size 14 by the end of summer. (Am currently in a 16/18 depending on brand of clothing.) My secondary goal is to lose 25 additional pounds. I am not setting a time limit on that one. My tertiary goal is to work up to 45 minutes on the exercise bike, although the exercise bike is freaking BORING, so I may have to retool that goal slightly.
Can you put the exercise bike in front of the TV, or read a book while you’re cycling?
Do you have an MP3 player? I can’t exercise without my iPod. Some people can read on the exercise bike, too. I personally cannot—I hate to read when I’m sweaty—but I wish I could.
I’m having a rough week. I’m recovering from a stomach bug that had me down Sunday and Monday. I went back to work yesterday but was pretty out of it. Today I’m feeling much better. The good news is that I barely ate anything for three days (I weighed myself Monday morning and I only weighed 162—today I’m at 164). The bad news is that it’s also kept me away from the gym. I plan to get back at it today but also fully intend to listen to my body.
I lost another 1.5lbs at Fat Club last night so I’m not doing so badly. That’s a total of 23lbs since I started in January, with only another 18lbs to go until I hit my personal target. I’ve dropped a dress size and am on the way to dropping another size soon, so I have plenty to be happy about.
I was bad last night. I had Tommy’s. (plus chili cheese fries) I’m deciding to regret nothing since I’ve been a perfect diet and exercise angel for weeks now.
Back on the horse today!
You had Tommy’s what? Did he mind?
