SDMB Weight Loss Club, June 2008

http://www.originaltommys.com/ Hamburger chain. The best part is the chili, I’m convinced it has crack in it.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I love to read and wish I could do it on the bike, but it’s just too hard when I’m sweaty and out of breath. The MP3 player, however… I have a crummy little not-really-an-Ipod that would hold a few NPR podcasts perhaps. That is not a bad idea.

I really wish I had a nicer exercise bike, because mine is “vintage” (to put it politely) and I can’t vary the resistance while using it. I’d rather get outside and just do some walking outdoors, but with three small children in tow, it’s not much of a workout. I’ll stick with the bike for now, I guess.

Because I really, really sweat, I can’t wear earphones while working out. If my ear canals get damp and warm I’ll end up with a fungal infection in there and I will desire to use a shotgun to get rid of the itch.

This ticks me off - I have signed up for a 10k charity run (Cancer Research UK, 21st September) and I really want to improve my pace. A set of timed MP3 tracks correlated with landmarks on my run would be perfect, but I don’t want to risk it.

Have you considered putting cotton in your ears, and using regular headphones, as opposed to the earbuds that come with ipods? Cotton may soak up the sweat, and you can just turn the volume up…

Joe

Well, that sucks. I personally use the earbuds that have things that come up over the tops of your ears (they are a bit hard to describe, but are made for runners and the like). I can only keep the regular earbuds in for approximately 15 seconds at a time when I’m sweating. I don’t suppose those would help your situation, though.

I am also now picturing you running your 10k to the Rocky theme, but that’s my own personal issue.

Okay, I just found out something on Sparkpeople that I didn’t now. Thanks to Faeriebeth, who wrote about Alton Brown (my secret boyfriend) on her blog, which led me to this discovery.

SparkRecipes has a Recipe Calculator. You plug in your ingredients and you can get the nutrition info of your homemade meals. I haven’t tried it yet, but I plan to!

Okay, this is absurd. Despite having cut back on my food intake a little more, I’ve still managed to gain back five pounds this month! So, I am doing one or a combination of several things:

  1. Not exercising enough - entirely possible, given that work has gotten so busy that exercising during the day is nigh on impossible.

  2. Eating more than I think.

  3. Pregnant. This is a remote possibility, but a possibility nonetheless. For two weeks, I’ve felt much the same way I did with my son during the first part of my pregnancy. Plus, I took one pregnancy test which was inconclusive. The next one came back negative, but having had one come up inconclusive, I think I may need to take another if only to ease my mind. Another baby wouldn’t be a bad thing - just…unexpected.

  4. PMS-y. But for a month?

I’m thinking it’s most likely a combination of 1 and 2 with 3 a distant second and 4 the least likely. If none of the above proves to be true (or if number 3 proves true, obviously), I’ll obviously consult with my physician. Heck, I think I might do that anyway. You know - just to make sure. Urgh.

Official Weigh In results for this week: 182.2 pounds. That’s a 0.4 pound loss, which is not bad, considering I was PMS-y today (literally, like an hour and a half after weigh in).

My final weigh in for June was 172.2. Slightly less loss this week but I expected that since I couldn’t work out as much. Total loss for the month, 7.8 pounds.

Nice job!

According to physicsdiet.com (I weigh every day and average it there), I lost 3 pounds this month. In actuality, I’ve been yo-yo-ing in the 164-167 range all month long. I think I’m going to try out HIIT (high intensity interval training) on the elliptical to see if I can’t break this little plateau and get into the lower 160s. I’m very ready to go into maintenance mode for a while.

200 on the nose. I seem to have been up and down the last few weeks, still trending downwards (which is some comfort, anyway). A lifestyle change this week with some casual labour working in a warehouse, but I’d have thought that would be burning more calories and I’ve not been eating more to compensate bar a spot of overindulging yesterday. Too early to call it plateauing, I think.

I’m back from the gym. (Well, I took a shower, too.) I tried the intervals and loved it. I figured it would be a good time to experiment since my time on the elliptical was split in two 15-minute sessions around my weight training today. For the first 15 minutes I did intervals of two minutes on level 5 followed by one minute on level 8. For the second 15 minutes I used the elliptical’s interval setting on level 5. It threw some different levels in there (I think it was 2, 4, 6, and 8). It was a little less intense, I think, but probably more suitable for a longer workout. I think I will try that tomorrow when I have a 40-minute session scheduled.

I am going to weigh myself later this week. I am scared of the numbers the scale will show since I have been subsisting on leftover birthday cake for several days now. :frowning:

I hear you pbbth - I was off weight watchers from Thursday through to yesterday and have my weigh in this afternoon. I suspect I’ve gained a pound or so, but maybe I’ll be lucky and have just stayed the same.

Official weight as of yesterday 165.6, which means I’ve lost 1.5 pounds in the last 10 days, and need to lose only .6 to meet my short term goal. I’ve stopped eating after 8pm which I think has made a diffference.

Onwards and downwards!

Woohoo! I went to a concert-club-night-craziness weekend with a couple of friends, and didn’t weigh myself for three days. Lots of water, lots of “we’re all starving and it’s 3 AM, let’s go to Denny’s,” lots of “this music is great, let’s hit the dance floor,” so I figured I’d come out about even for the weekend.

Instead, I finally broke through the 160 plateau! I’m down to 159! happydance 4 more lbs and I will be halfway to my goal! I just had to come celebrate somewhere, hehe.

Throws confetti…offers a 100-calorie Hostess Chocolate Cake pack…

Forgot to report in - only gained a pound this week which I was happy with, and as my leader said if you’re gaining one week a year out of 52 then you’re doing well. I’m sure I’ll shift it off again next week.

Anyone else want to start the July thread? I can do it if no one else wants to.

Consider it started.
