If this is correct then it could be a problem for Payton to even work as a Game Analyst for tv. Usually they interview coaches for the pre-game show. I guess “he could” strictly work the broadcast booth, and make a point to avoid everybody.
I think they’ve done Payton and the commissioner a favor by making the rules strict. This way there should be a clean break between Payton and the NFL. “Hopefully” he won’t be tempted to meddle during the season. Walk away for a year and don’t look back. Less heartburn for the Commissioner and Payton.
Working as a tv Game Analyst would be a good way for Payton to keep his eyes on the NFL. Maybe even scout the other teams for when he returns next season.
There’s a crazy twitter rumor he might step in for a season at Arkansas. The NFL even responded today that would be fine with them. I don’t see that happening. A strange coach can’t just step into a system that he’s totally unfamiliar with. The college game is too different from the pros. But, it is a fun rumor.
I didn’t really think much about this restriction before, but I’m guessing this is the goal. He’s out of the league, and doesn’t get to sign a fat analyst contract to tide him over until next season. He gets to sit home, watch the games on TV and maybe run a football camp for high schoolers.
I’ve heard speculation that Payton may return as a better coach next year. A year off gives him a much needed mid-life break. Coaches often get tunnel vision because they work such brutal hours and there entire life is consumed by their sport. There’s been several burn out cases in Football. Dick Vermeil is probably the best known case.
It does sound like Payton will lose a years salary. For his sake, I hope he’s got some savings.
I noticed the news articles say Payton’s return next year is conditional on what he does during this year off. I’m guessing if he gets caught texting his coaches or meeting them for late night strategy help then he could be banned permanently. He better take this seriously and stay away from the Saints for the year.
He makes $6 million a year, give or take. I find it hard to believe he can’t afford to support his family for a year even if he has no financial discipline.
