Seriously, just a couple of minutes ago I did a search in GQ (wondering what my kitty was dreaming about), and found a good discussion many months back. I’m glad that I was able to do so.

Well…Jelsoft themselves refer to most Board modifications as “hacks” on their own User Forum (which I hang out on), even if done by their own developers and supported by them. Thus, you may see me use the term “hack” in a non-disparaging manner sometimes when referring to the vBulletin software.

The manual for vBulletin is publicly available, however it contains little information for aiding serious modification - IMO. The User Forums contain much more information, and the Jelsoft developers themselves are typically very helpful and supportive of modifications. Thus, help may be best found by exploring that avenue.

Okay then. I tried being nice about it, now it’s time to get out the clue-by-four.

We set up the search function the way we did for a reason, NOT to be fucked with by a “limited few” with special knowledge looking for a little “luxury.” If we find people are going to be screwing with it in this way, then we may have no choice but to close it down. It does not make us very comfortable setting up things for a specific reason knowing that some clown is going to try to circumvent what we’re trying to do.

You may not use the search function very often, but at least have some respect for those who do.

What Euty said. A “little luxury” for a few will slow down or stop the entire board for everyone else trying to access the message board at the time. DON’T USE IT.

Well, the problem is you can’t un-ring that bell, now that people have read it. Fierra figured it out too, FYI, and decided (wisely, of course) not to use it or to post about it either, as that would clearly go against the wishes of the Administration here. So it is likely many others will figure it out on their own, and start using it.

And just wanna mention (non-confrontationally) that so far, all the change in the Search function has done for me vis-a-vis “speeding up the MB” is that instead of being slower than molasses in January, it is now only slower than molasses in February.

And that’s a New England February, not a Deep South February.
