Whoa, you must, be like, magic or something.
Thank you. Your announcement sums it up nicely. I know I look forward to tonight’s announcement by Ed.
Yes, thank you for the update and the timely response.
I look forward to Ed’s announcement
So…we can expect a new server architecture, it seems.
Hope that means one that works.
Happy dance!
AIR!
::takes deep breaths::
whew!
I guarantee this will be one of the most closely watched threads (and boards) on the Internet tonight–so much so that so many page refreshes will crash the old server before they are able to upload it all to the new one. :smack:
I can see it now . . . “Must see SDMB!”

Dang man, I should be a TV executive or something.
Both servers will be on at the same time, and will both begin transmitting the message, “THERE IS ANOTHER SYSTEM…”
Even better: both will network together, become ‘self-aware’, pass a Doper-driven Turing test, get fed up with it’s newfound sentience being Pitted, and then try to eliminate the human race. :dubious:

Where’s Sarah Connor when you need her?
Shit.
Shitshitshitshitshit.
I knew Search was back because after a weekend of speedy bliss, I sit down to check the boards after lunch and wham, it’s timeouts.
Again.
Shit.
I mean, thanks for the update and all, and for all the hard work, I do appreciate that, but like I said earlier, I’d rather have Search disabled and be able to post, period, than have Search enabled and sit here looking at “Problem Loading Page” messages from Firefox.
thanks.
… which will be saved when the new server’s preemptive strike is cancelled due to a timeout.
It could happen, that is the scary part.
That’s because you don’t understand the amount of money the SDMB would be making if they partnered with Google on search.
What exactly does that mean and how much do you figure? AFAIK a “Google Search Partner” would be another search engine that uses Google’s database. The SDMB is already a Google Ads partner. The SD store is a bit of a joke so I can’t imagine you mean directing customers to that with sponsored links. I really can’t think what sort of revenue generation you’re meaning.
I’m quite familiar with the concept of zero, thanks all the same - the Babylonians were kind enough to invent it quite some time ago for describing precisely this sort of situation, and I’ve been conducting some rigorous experiments with it using my bank balance of late. So far I’ve discovered that six zeroes are only fun if there’s a number in front of them.
Seriously, though; what on earth are you on about? Are you really suggesting that Google will pay to be allowed to spider our little board? Because they won’t, you know.

Regardless of the rightness, qualifies as post of the week!!!
Not only through referrals from organic search results who end up either registering here, clicking on Google ads or both, but also by displaying those ads on a Google Custom Search page (and there is no reason to not offer both search engines - plenty of sites do this). This is a top 20,000 site without any search engine referals. If the robots policy was relaxed it seems plausible that it would easily breach the top 10,000 and with forums like GQ, probably further. I realize you’re not familiar with the revenue streams of popular sites that earn their dough by first drawing traffic from commercial search engines and then showing ads to those visitors. It seems to be a common theme around here.
As has been pointed during conversations in past eras of extreme slowness, every time the hardware here is upgraded the website simply expands to fill capacity. This has been happening for a decade and I’m not sure why anyone believes it will be different this time.
I think the phrase “letting the riff-raff in” is applicable here.
When is this announcement supposed to take place? It’s already almost 9:00 PM CDT here in the US. Have I missed it?
