When using this tool to search for keywords in multiple documents, the “search puppy” retrieved erroneous results. Anyone know why this tool is so unreliable? It seems to have the ability to find words that once were within the text, but they do not appear in the latest version of the document.
So, why is it finding old text? WAG: I was using “track changes”, but I then “accepted all changes” in the last version. Is the “search puppy” seeing an older version, perhaps? - Jinx
I recommend installing Google Desktop which once set up (it takes a while to index your entire PC) is amazing in that it allows you to search for things on your own PC with the same kind of efficiency of everyday Google search.
I suspect that here the issue is not in your search tool, but in MS word. Probably even though you’ve ‘accepted all changes’, the older versions are still embedded in the file format - even though they don’t show up by default.
The problems that I’ve found more serious in the windows search tool are where the words definitely appear in the file, and yet don’t show up in the search. That’s why I use Agent Ransack for searches inside files, especially on programming source code.
The previous versions are definitely still there. There have been quite a few instances of Word documents that were released with the prior revisions still included, and being exposed by the recipient. People like opposing lawyers, contract negotiators, political candidates, etc. have been embarrassed by this.
