So, some friends and I had a party a while back and made some grog. I think we got it wrong because it was some vile stuff. At a party recently, my friend had what was left over, and honestly, after a while, it tasted pretty good. So, I’m thinking of trying it again. But, I want some help.
So, who out there has made Grog before, and do you have a recipe that actually tastes good while fresh? What are some other piraty foods, if you happen to know?
I don’t know about grog, but I had a glass of mead the last time the local Renassaince festival was in town. It’s fermented honey; it was sweet without having a strong flavor. I liked it.
Pilot biscuits and weevilly hardtack?
Grog is just rum mixed with water. I think it’s 3 parts water to 1 part rum, but I could be wrong about the proportions. This is what was served as part of British sailors’ rations until about the 1950s.
It could be that whatever you had at that party was called grog by its maker, but it probably wasn’t the real thing.
Let’s see here… from The Joy of Cooking:
