Seatbelts, everyone! (A Poll)

For awhile, Montana had (essentially) no speed limit. We’ve had a mandatory seatbelt law for several years.

A young couple went off the Interstate at 95 mph. Rolled repeatedly. The Highway Patrol officer was qouted as saying, “If the driver had been wearing a seatbelt, she might have lived. If the passenger had been wearing a seatbelt, they might have had an open casket.”

I wear my seatbelt.

You can add Colorado to the list. Initially you had to be stopped for something else.

As far as the poll goes, I buckle up every day. I start to feel uncomfortable when I have forgotten. I used to think wearing one was uncomfortable, but now it’s a habit. I do think it’s a good law.

  1. Is it a law where you live that you have to wear your seatbelt?
    Yerp

  2. Do you?
    Yerp
3a) If yes, do you because it’s a law, or because you believe it makes you safer?
Safer, less likely to fall on floor if i fall asleep. and i dont really notice it.
oh, and that thing about rear seat passengers killing front seet passengers/drivers int eh event of a collision.
u have no right to pulverise the person in front of you.
    3b) If no, why not?

  3. If you do have such a law, do you agree with it?
I agree witht eh law i guess. although it is very much a ’ your life do what u want with it ’ kinda thing. i dont like the idea of a corpse coming flying accross throught whe windscreen of the other car, through mine, and pulverising me.
so there. it could hurt me!
    and 3a)

I always make sure the person behind me in teh car has his belt on. that advert spooked me.
and i make sure the person behind the driver does too. dont want him pulverised either.
adn i dont want the people in the back pulverised.

Please wear your seatbelts, just so taht i ( even if it is just an illusion) feel like you all know you are special people who shouldnt be killed cos you couldnt be botered to clunk-click with every trip.

I never really thought about it before today. its just been a reflex. Now i have a much clearer feeling on my feelings.
thanks whoever made teh OP.

Yes, wearing a seatbelt is mandatory where I live. I wore my seatbelt long before it was a law, simply because it’s the smart thing to do.

I really wish everyone would wear their seatbelts. I’ve heard the explanation here and IRL that “Hey, it’s my life, if I die in a crash because I don’t want to wear a seatbelt, what do you care?”

I care plenty. If your insurance company has to pay out more for medical bills or death benefits because you couldn’t be bothered wearing a seatbelt, then that raises rates for the rest of us. Also, even if an accident were proven to be your fault, and you died, don’t you think the other driver(s) involved would feel horrible about it? So, your carelessness does indeed affect others.

Are there accidents where someone is thrown clear of a vehicle that, say, then explodes? Sure. Not wearing a seatbelt arguably saved that person’s life. However, for every instance like that, there are thousands of others where seatbelts saved lives or prevented further injury. The statistics are overwhelmingly in favor of wearing a seatbelt.
