Seattle Dopers - What's up?

Well, thanks to the generosity of Northwest Airlines, my father and I will be going to Seattle for a long weekend on the 6th of June. Staying at the Fairmont, which appears to be near downtown.

Things on the “To-Do” list are the Boeing tour, Pike Place Market, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the Space Needle, EMP, and the Underground tour.

Too ambitious? Any suggestions? Any Doper meets?

Feedback, please, and thanks.

Sounds like a good excuse for one.

That’s the weekend before finals, so I’m not sure how free I’ll be but if there is a meetup I’ll see what I can do.

Depending on how long you’re actually going to be here and how much time you want to spend doing different things, your itinerary might be a little ambitious. There’s a lot of stuff at the EMP, for instance. However, you know your own interests and energy levels best.

I would recommend that if you’re going to the Locks anyway, you take a little time to wander through lovely downtown Ballard. I’m serious; it’s an older neighborhood and Ballard Ave. has good bars, restaurants and music venues. Ballard and Fremont both have Sunday markets.

Are you going to be taking public transport or renting a car?

The Boeing tour , which is in Everett, is going to take you about 40 minutes to an hour to reach. It’s a sort of long drive, but so worth it. I work for Boeing, and I took my parents on it when they were here a few years ago. I gotta hand it to Boeing - they do great PR. It is a really fascinating tour. If you have any problem walking, just let them know. Mr. singular and I both have severe arthritis, so instead of the long walk through the tunnel under the floor of the main plant (the largest building in the world), we got to ride a golf cart across the floor. It was particularly thrilling to be driven directly under a nearly-complete 747 on the way!

Check out the Japanese Gardens. We saw them in Autumn and they were stunning… in Spring I bet they’re to die for.

Thanks for the replies so far. Renting a car for transport, but will probably keep it parked most of the time - go figure. At least it’s cheap. Looking forward to the Boeing tour very much.

Wandering around Ballard sounds good, will try to fit that in.

Keep up the comments, I’m watching!

It’s right in the middle of the film festival, which barely gives me enough free time to eat and shit. So no meets for me, sadly.

But it sounds like you’ve got some good activities. The weather should be pretty nice.

I think you’ve covered all the major tourist activities, except for the Museum of Flight:

Museum of flight is intriguing, as is the SIFF, which I hadn’t heard of. My dad loves documentaries! Might try to catch something at that, too.

Not trying to be too jam packed, but do have only a short time on the ground.

BTW, any thoughts on the Fairmont as a hotel and its location?

Thanks again,

MC
