Seattle or Portland: Which city should I move to?

Holy moly. I was talking to my cousin last week about his early childhood home. That’s about 3 blocks from there. I remember walking around that intersection as a very little kid … a long time ago.

Things have changed in Portland in the 3.5 years since the OP.

The influx of people continues, traffic is getting really bad. And the housing prices are skyrocketing. Really, really bad. I’ve had relatives who’ve been forced to move away since they can’t afford to live there anymore.

The city is coping badly with all this. E.g., the homeless are increasing in numbers and suitable places to put them are disappearing.

I say forget both Portland and Seattle unless you have significant moola. Look towards the smaller cities away from the big metroplexes.

It is changing. I doubt I’d succeed in moving here now the way I did just a few years ago. So far, my rent has only gone up a few bucks every year. That combined with a reasonably secure job means we can hang on here for a while. I’m not sure what will come next, but it doesn’t feel like Portland is forever for us.
