Damn i would have been in a lot more trouble…

Secret Agent Mom: New Technology Helps Parents Track Teens – whoa

Wow. Just wow. That’s amazing.

I find myself wondering, since I work in an office with a large sales force that’s out of the office most of the time making sales calls, how log it will be before employers start tracking their employees.

I can see it now. The sales director can’t get Salesman X on the phone. Well, he has an appointment right now at the Smith’s house, let’s see if he’s there. Hooks into the GPS tracking system and …what…that can’t be right…Salesman X is at the Sales Director’s house…what’s he doing there? And where is the director’s wife?

Wow, I am somewhat torn on this. I see the need and possible use - what if they’re genuinely in trouble, etc. But I can’t see this as building independence or anything like that. And I know that it would cause a lot of trouble in a lot of homes if the kid hadn’t done anything to warrant it and yet you were still tracking her/his every movement.

What a horrible, revolting use of technology. Talk about telling a kid they’re not trusted. Man, if my mom had tried pulling something like this when I was younger, I’d have been so…

…waitaminute. I’m a father now. Sorry…carry on, O purveyors of child spyware.

They do now. I know of several companies that do so (friends work there).

I think many utility companies keep track of where their repair trucks are. Only to know how long repairs take.

I wonder if there is going to be a backlash against tech someday.

We have this at my work to track delivery drivers . It works well as it can also be set up to send an e-mail when a driver stays at one location for more than X-minutes or drives over X-miles an hour. Drivers are one thing, but I would think if I had children, I would like to be able to trust them.

As a father of 4, let me say that I agree with this statement. Especially in the linked story, as the ‘child’ in question is 18 years old. If you don’t slow down, mommy’s coming to get you?? Jesus, what have we come to?

Let out the kids leash a little bit. Sure, they’ll hang themselves with it from time to time, but by and large they’ll be better off for it.
