Secret Red Cross report says administration officials could face war crimes charges

Bush will be surrounded with plenty of Blackwater bodyguards for the rest of his natural life, don’t you worry about that.

Speaking for myself, in all honesty, I wouldn’t have a big problem with this. Arrest both of 'em and hand 'em to the international court, and see what happens. It’d certainly demonstrate an evenhanded, nonpartisan approach to justice. I have my doubts that either of them would actually be convicted by an international court, but whatever. The main thing is, polarization of the two sides and demonization of the opposition have become so extreme that I suspect a whole lot of people on both sides would be willing to tolerate seeing “their” guy in the dock if it meant the “other” guy was to be similarly grilled.* If nothing else, it’d absolutely put the fear of [del]God[/del] Law into our future leadership.

*ETA: Either that, or the whole country would pull together behind both of them in defense of “our guys” against the “furriners.” Sure would be funny to see the conservatives obstructing the prosecution of Clinton and the liberals obstructing the prosecution of Bush in the name of American sovereignty.

No, it doesn’t.

I could see someone that the average American has never heard of taking the fall for a lot of this mess as a scapegoat, but Bush and his cabinet, and the joint chiefs, and any generals, will never be punished in any way. Even if they are tried and sentenced in absentia in foreign or international court, the sentence will never be carried out. The worst that could happen is that they would find it prudent to avoid travelling to that country for the rest of their lives.

Where will that be, Fantasyland? Is he going to move into Cinderella’s Castle?

You people are from another planet, I swear.

Yeah, it’s called “Earth”.

If seriously think Bush is going to waltz around unprotected for the rest of his life, you’re the one who’s deluded. Rich people get to hide from the consequences of their actions by hiding behind big ugly bodyguards; there’s no serious dispute about that.

ahem

Cinderella’s Castle is an area unto itself at the Magic Kingdom and is not technically part of any of the “lands”.

The point of course being that Bush won’t be surrounded by ‘plenty of Blackwater bodyguards for the rest of his natural life’, but will have a Secret Service (not even that for the rest of his life). Perhaps you meant it as a joke or hyperbole…but I think Airman was responding to loony lefty connotations feeling described there. Use a smiley next time if you are talking tongue in cheek.

Goddamn, do I have to get out a whiteboard and draw a picture for you? Bush is not going to have Secret Service protection forever, we already established that. Once his SS protection expires, you think he’s going to just walk around waiting for someone to put a bullet in his head? No, he’s going to do the same as everybody else who has a lot of enemies and a lot of money… hire bodyguards from a private security company. The mention of Blackwater was a rhetorical flourish maybe, but not at all hyperbole… private security is what they do (when they aren’t serving as American military surrogates in Iraq).

Why no actually, you don’t…you merely have to acknowledge the point (no whiteboard required), which…

…aside from the handwaving you have. Thanks for your support!

Maybe you should have mentioned a private security company that nobody has heard of. Because only loony left paranoid conspiracy theorists use names of companies that are commonly known.

Conversely he could have just said ‘a private security company’, instead of the obviously loaded ‘Blackwater’…who most likely won’t be doing GW’s security once his Secret Service detail leaves. That way you avoid sounding like a loony lefty who is just trying score points. YMMV of course…

“Loading” the statement with mention of the word “Blackwater” is hardly an indication of mental illness. While it might be unlikely in this specific instance, it’s hardly implausible. And the administration’s relationship with Blackwater is obvious, prominent, and worthy of mild satire in one line of an Internet discusstion.

Mild satire in the form of a plausible reference to Blackwater doesn’t go anywhere near “loony” in my book. And in my world rhetorical point-scoring is possible only when the point is valid in the first place.

Well, ‘loony’ was as hyperbolic as using ‘Blackwater’ to denote private security…I figured you knew that. While some might think that simply being a lefty makes on a candidate for a rubber room, I personally don’t subscribe to that theory.

Blackwater is certainly a security firm, but they don’t, afaik, specialize in high value personal security that Bush would need. Here is their website if you are curious…they seem to be more military contractor specialists. I’m no expert, but I think these kinds of firms are very vertical markets.

And of course, Blackwater was used simply for the effect because of it’s association with the Iraqi war and the negative connotations that evokes…not because the poster was serious about them ACTUALLY being used to provide security for Bush.

YMMV…I wasn’t even involved in the initial discussion of this but merely putting in my two cents worth…though you may feel that the price was high at that rate. Feel free.

Likewise, if you don’t want to sound like a mouth-breathing right-wing talking-point-parroting moron, you could avoid the knee-jerk reaction of equating a mention of “Blackwater” with “loony lefty”. Just a tip on how you can craft your posts to best suit my perception of the world, since we’re being all helpful today.

Well thank you! I appreciate the tip! I’ll try not to be “a mouth-breathing right-wing talking-point-parroting moron” in future…
