Security cercificate expired IE won't let us into site. Need help fast (really)

Netbook on a wireless at home. IE keeps blocking simple sites like rent-a-cars and verizon wireless. Even if I totaly open up IE security, and accept the site. Or allow block content. What gives?

---- My Wife and I just got back from her fathers funeral in Pittsburgh. Now she needs to fly back for her Uncles funeral whom died today. It would be much easier if we could use the net book. Why would IE be blocking these sites? Could it be a router setting?

try another browser - if it doens’t block sites with another browser, it’s not your router.

Check your computers date and time - you may have accidentally set it a few years ahead or back. This would cause the security cert problem.

FireFox blocks the sites as well. I guess it’s a router setting then?

I can’t think of a router setting that would cause a security cert expired error…

It’s very odd. I can’t find such a setting for my router. I guess I could reinstall it all but am hesitant to do so. I/we, my Wife and I have a lot to do in a day.

Can you describe the problem you’re seeing more specifically? Somehow provide a screenshot?

I just had this problem with my desktop, but not for the same sites. When using firefox, there was a small link at the bottom of the page that said “add exception” or something like that, it was the bottom left link. If you click on that, you will get a new screen that has a couple options, although I can’t remember what they are. I hope that helps, and sorry its vague.

I really recommend against this sort of thing. There is something wrong with the certificates on the netbook. Don’t try and bypass the security setup for things that should be secure and do have good certificates like banking and shopping websites.

Below is the link to microsoft to get new root certificates.

Trying to get to my verizon online acount I get this ----

There is a problem with this website’s security certificate.

The security certificate presented by this website has expired or is not yet valid.

Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

I’m getting much of the same from other sites, that may have security. I think It may be a java problem. I saw a java error on one.

If I continue to the web site. I get a 404.

Thanks guys.

So have you checked the clock? If it is much off, it won’t synchronize with time.gov either.

That’s really strange, I’ve never heard of anything affecting certs in both browsers. I came here to suggest the same thing as Alex_Dubinsky, is your system clock correct? That’s the only thing I can think of.

Getting a 404 if you click continue is pretty strange too tho, and I don’t think that would be explained by the clock being off.

Java, I can’t imagine what that would have to do with anything.

Under Tools>Internet options>advanced I unchecked IEs option to check for security certificates. It’s wide open as far as I can see.

If you do think it’s your router, try unplugging the cable that goes from the modem to the router, and plugging it directly in to the computer. You may need to turn the computer off and then on again after doing this to get a connection.

If you still have the problem, it’s not the router.

We had a similar thread a while back and someone suggested the clock, and that indeed was the problem.

Thanks. I’ll try that. ummm… clock?

I can’t do it at the moment as my wife is on the desktop. The desk top dose not give security certificate errors. The router is hooked to the desktop, and the desktop is on a direcway sattelite.

It’s nuts. We just did a 3200 mile road trip to go to my FILs funeral. We got home and my wife has to go back. It’s been a rough couple of weeks. Family first.

It’s the clock, I’m 99% sure. Check the year.

Bingo Bingo Bingo.

Thanks hekk. My net book was on January for some reason. Thanks again.

I can’t help you with your computer problems, but I wanted to tell you I’m sorry for your wife’s losses. I too have made emergency trips to Pittsburgh for funerals and while it’s no great city in the normal way of things it really sucks to go there for a funeral. (Ours are planted at Queen of Heaven. It was snowing, last time. By that time, “snow” wasn’t even special anymore, which for a South Carolina girl is saying something.)

Either the year, or because you just finished a long road trip it might be time zone. I haven’t worked with certificates much, but that would explain the 404 as well. Not only is the certificate got dates, but your computer, and the server have to have syncronized clocks for the encryption to work.

Double click on the time in the bottom corner of the screen. Verify date, and time.

edit: glad to see you got it fixed. This is what I get for waiting a few hours after opening to post a quick reply.
