Seeing your music heroes age

Are you sure that’s Eric Clapton ,and not Fred Rogers?

In the last few years, we’ve been seeing a bunch of guys who we might not get a chance to see again: Bob Seger, Black Sabbath, Roger Waters…and we’ll catch the Eagles later this year (a bit late for Glen Frey, unfortunately).

I’d still go to a Clapton concert if possible. Doesn’t matter if he’s sitting down.

John Fogerty and Bob Seger are on my wish list too. Seger guested on The Voice a couple years ago and looked good. Fogerty was a guest coach and looked his age.

My ultimate concert is David Gates from Bread. I don’t think he’s toured recently.

I agree about Robert Plant. I read somewhere he is still very vain about his hair. However, I do give him credit for realizing years ago there are some LZ songs he just shouldn’t be performing anymore. First, he no longer has the vocal range, and second, it’s creepy & pervy once he’s past 60 (or even 50) to be singing those lines from Black Dog and The Lemon Song.

Billy Joel will turn 69 in May. Even sitting behind a piano, he looks like he may have a coronary at any given moment. I’ve seen him twice in concert, and even 20 years ago, he had a binder on his piano with the lyrics to his songs. He said that he had some trouble remembering the words.

Pat Benatar looks and sounds phenomenal. She’s aging extremely well. We saw her and Neil Geraldo last year and highly recommend them.

Ray Davies (73!) appears to be spent. Spent well, but spent nonetheless.

Debbie Harry(72) once sang Die Young, Stay Pretty. And that’s all I got to say about that. I will always admire her as a woman who managed to become a huge success as an artist, in spite of her looks.

The Damned (early 60s) are still an amazing live show, but age is catching up with them–2017 saw Vanian wreck his shoulder falling into the drum kit, and Sensible wreck his ribs falling…off the stage…drunk. Stylistically they have grown a lot in 40 years, all great stuff. But from what I’ve heard of their upcoming release I think they might be about done. Sounds a little like Moody Blues (like in the Long Distance Voyager days – bleargh).

Joan Jett (59) is still going strong, and I’m hoping I can see her play soon.

I’d add Boston, but I can’t listen to them without Delp.

Phil Collins can’t play drums any more and he can barely walk on stage. He can still sing, but from all the YouTube clips I’ve seen, he isn’t worth seeing in concert any longer. Thankfully, Steve Hackett can still put on an excellent show even though he’s not getting any younger.

Yeah, Beck and John Fogerty. And those bandannas ain’t fooling anyone either.
