Seeking advice on, er, hair restoration.

No, I’m not balding. And according to my family history, I happily never will.

Ever since I was a baby, I’ve had a roughly 2½" scar on the back of my head. In a nutshell, It was caused by me cutting my head on a screw sticking out of a staircase bannister. My parents weren’t big into hospitals (or home babyproofing, for that matter), so they opted to just let it heal without stitches, hence a pretty nasty scar.

I cut my hair short because it looks terrible long. I get asked about the scar all the time and am tired of telling people the story. Yes, I could make up something cool like I won a knife fight, but I’d rather people just not ask about it at all. Why is it socially acceptable to ask about a scar on the back of one’s head, but not a scar on his or her face?

Does anyone have any idea what my options are as far as getting hair restoration done on that scar? How expensive is it, generally? I don’t want to waste a doc’s time on a consultation if it’s going to be way out of my price range.

Thanks for any info.

No one?

IANAD, but I would guess going to a plastic surgeon for scar removal would be your best option.

A plastic surgeon can reduce the scar to a thin line. I have two pretty prominent surgical scars on my spine and the top of my butt that people ask about a lot and I’d rather not discuss it, but people are curious and often just looking to sympathize. It seems like scar reduction or creating a quick, closed-end answer for impolite strangers might be more effective and less invasive and time consuming than hair-restoration for a thick, uneven scar.

IANAD either, but I also have a scalp scar and I’ve looked a little into cosmetic procedures. Hair transplants are optimal but cost several thousand dollars. If the scar falls along Langer’s lines (or Borges or whatever), a surgeon may be able to close it up without hair restoration.
