AotC also had that homage to Asteroids/sonic (yeah, no sound in space, whatever, it was cool) boom business too. Pretty much anything Obi Wan was up to without the Whining Padawan was fun to watch
Are the “35mm originals” the same thing that was shipped on reels to theaters? I had lunch with guy at the convention who scored an opened boxed set of ANH film reels for $50…don’t know much about collecting, but that seemed like a great find.
Normally I don’t comment in Star Wars threads, since I’m more of a trekker, but I can’t let this slide.
Some of the Star Trek movies are better, probably less than half. (The old saying that “Even good, odd suck” isn’t exactly accurate, but close enough). But by having that many movies, a lot of dreck can be filtered out. Heck, throw in the TV shows, and you can have pretty crappy Star Trek (Like Voyager’s Threshold) and still think that the franchise as a whole is good.
I dare you to tell me that Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was better than even the prequels.
I will without hesitation. One: shit that you care about actually happens in Final Frontier, and two: it’s not all loaded down with ersatz political intrigue and wooden dialogue/acting. And three: the main characters are people you actually care about, versus the charisma-free leads that populate the SW prequel trilogy.
Is it the best Trek film? Of course not. But is it better than the SW prequels (especially Episodes I and II)? You bet your sweet bippy it is.
Oh, I dunno. How many films do you think have been made over the last century or so? I’m going to assume that Trek 2 is better than all porno movies and that by itself has got to put it in the 15th percentile…
Yes, that’s the stuff. And $50 for a complete set is an absolute bargain, unless it had a lot of wear and tear or the colours had gone reddish (that happens to film prints sometimes after several years, it’s a chemical reaction of some sort).
Bear in mind that any print from 1977 is not called ANH or even episode IV but simply “Star Wars”. Copies they struck after 1980 will say “Ep. IV - ANH”.
Stormtroopers being clones was done for the same reason Greedo shot first. In the original trilogy our heroes shot real bad guys. In TPM this must have been considered politically incorrect, so they just smashed up robots. Yes, even clones have feelings, but clearly Lucas considers them not quite people.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the new edition doesn’t have the guy whose arm Obiwan chops off reattaching it, and shouting "flesh wound.: And I’m too lazy to find the Robot Chicken take on this.
BTW, I much prefer your version to what was released.
He took the out of the box at lunch - could not see the condition of the reels. But that labels were white with blue lettering, and did read “Star Wars”. I think the box side was embossed on gold print as “Star Wars - A New Hope”
Fights, shit go boom, having a respite from seeing Anakin whine-works for me. YMMV, me, I ate my popcorn and enjoyed the shiny boom booms. Except PM- I can’t think of anything in that I actually enjoyed.
So what? These aren’t sacred works of art. And even if they were, it’s the artist making the changes. I get that people don’t like the changes, but the regard that the original release is held in is strange.
Greedo now shot first. Yawn. And I loved of the originals. I saw the original hundreds of times (we had a bootleg videotape version pre-VCR). I sure won’t let the stupid decision to have Greedo shoot first lessen my enjoyment (and it’s obvious that the hardcore fanboys hate every change*). Seems a road to bitterness.
*Never call it A New Hope!!! Ohh noes!!! When I saw it, it was called Star Wars!!!
Exactly! If I went round saying I was emperor just because I caught a frying pan in the face, they’d put me away!
…
ah the fleshwound refernce has already been made
…
and of course there are the gangs of squishy bears attacking big, armed stormtroopers. You’d almost think george lucas did it on purpose.
The point is, that the so-called artist is wrong because he thinks that better special effects make it a better movie. His updates don’t add anything, that is exactly the point. I dare you to mention one new addition that really matters.
Wether or not it is a work of arts depends on who you ask I guess, but if Leonardo had decided to give the Mona Lisa a moustache, thereby destroying the original, he also would have been wrong.
Oh and I mentioned the name change just in case people wondered if it was always meant to start with episode IV. Don’t just assume.
Greedo shooting first is a pretty major change that entirely alters how the characterization of one of the primary protagonists. But I’m assuming you were looking for a positive change.
Says you. I like better special effects. I mean I get the complaints about Greedo shooting first. I think there’s a lot of overreaction to it, but it’s a fair complaint. Complaints about improved SFX? Silly.
Well sure it looks better when you can’t see it’s just a model.
Personally I don’t give a f*** about greedo. Let’s not bicker and argue about who shot who first…
But, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but my suspension of disbelief isn’t more or less now that the spaceships have more CGI and there are more weirdos running around in mos eisley.
The paradox is, that it’s the original movies that gave george lucas the money and the power that he has today. Without the existing fan base, the new trilogy would never have gotten far.
And then he turns around and destroys the movies that made him the man he is today. I don’t mind him making twenty special editions, it’s his money, he can do with it what he likes. But he should have kept the originals.
