In a GD thread, somone has mentioned that s/he can’t get insurance in the states because of a genetic disorder.
I am wondering: Why don’t insurance companies offer something like “selective” insurance, i.e., “we’ll insure you for all medical expenses, except those that we can argue according to such-and-such standard arise from that genetic disorder”?

I’m not a doctor, but I guess it’s difficult to say that a disease is the result of a certain genetic disposition. At least for most diseases, there’s not a specific gene causing or triggering it. Genese might, to some degree, increase the risk of being affected by the disease during your lifetime, but they are just one of many factors which have influence on your health.
In some areas it is because state law forbids it. Such as here in California, you can exclude coverage for a particular condition but not longer than 12 months. In the case of a genetic disorder it would be reasonable to expect that care would be needed for the condition for longer than that 12 months so it would be more cost effective to simply deny coverage.
