Self proclaimed Christians

My cousin keeps adding to facebook the things that “self proclaimed Christians” should stop believing in like “karma”.
Just WTF

Every Christian IS self proclaimed.

Some proclaim it louder than others.

If you figure indoctrination from an early age into the equation, I’m not so sure.

Nothing inconsistent with karma & the Christian faith. We just believe karma is trumped by Grace.

(Bono made the same point a few years ago.)

I have one sister who is the biggest religious freak I know! It started many years ago, maybe around 20 years.

She went from being Catholic to Christian (more in a Baptist kind of way).

Then she would go to church all the time, and was pretty nice to be around.

Then she was convinced it was her job to help “save” us.

Then she proclaimed she knew that Catholics would not be allowed into Heaven. She changed her mind on that one a couple of years ago, so if you are Catholic you can stop worrying now.

She then started talking about the rapture, and how when it happens “any day now” she will be taken up to heaven, and will miss us.

She now believes every church is to PC and not true to the good book.

So now, she conducts weekly Bible Studies in her house, led by a “reformed” Jewish woman, who has a husband who thinks he is going to be the next Elvis.

She is now so far gone, she is the most self righteous bitch walking planet earth.

I no longer speak with her, and probably never will again, after the death of my Mom last November, and the terrible time she put me thru.

I respect all people and all religions, until they use their faith as an excuse to abuse others.

Good Riddance…

Well, considering karma usually requires a belief in reincarnation and pretty much all orthodox Christian theology says you get one life, die, and go to your eternal reward, she has a point. It’s not unreasonable to look at the First Commandment (“I am the Lord, thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.”) and figure that borrowing theological concepts from other religions falls under this.

On the other hand, the only beliefs necessary to be considered Christian are outlined in the Nicene Creed, and while resurrection is mentioned but reincarnation is not, it doesn’t explicitly exclude it. Jesus himself said the only two commandments his followers had to keep were to love the Lord, thy God with all thy hearts, minds, and souls, and to love thy neighbor as thyself. So, while “self-professed” Christians who believe in karma might have a speck in their collective eye, it sounds like your cousin is walking around with a plank in hers.

Religion in the US is just too weird.

Not all Christians hold this to be true:

I agree.

I agree with you and Grey. When I was very young I put down in my middle school yearbook, that I wanted to go on to study Theology

Yeah, that never happened.

I honestly am fascinated, and would love to know what the “truth” really is. :dubious:

I just wonder what they think “self-proclaimed” means. Usually it’s used to cast doubt on someone’s authenticity. But they are saying that self-proclaimed Christians are the ones that need to be more authentic and not adopt ideas from other religions.

Most of Christianity is borrowed from other religions. If you dumped everything but the original stuff it would be pretty much, “Hey, the son of God died for our sins.”
“Cool. What then?”
“Well, that’s pretty much it.”

I don’t care how self-proclaimed a Christian is, they aren’t a Christian until they emulate everything Jesus did, including cursing fig trees for not producing figs out of season.

I might give 'em a pass on dying by crucifixion, it’s tough to get that sentence these days. Damn liberal judges…

Hey, I never said they were consistent.

Cool story bro.
