SELL ME ON: Tom Waits

I was watching Austin City Limits tonight and they had Tom Waits on. Now, Waits seems to be highly regarded by critics, and granted, watching the show, he does seem to have a weird mesmerizing charisma about him. He also does a killer Louis Armstrongesque singing style. But I really can’t picture listening to his music for 90 minutes during a show!

Yet, watching the show, there were audience members who were really into his lyrics, actually laughing at some of his lines while I turned to Mrs. Virginslayer and said, “huh”?

Can someone explain his appeal? What is it he is trying to do as an artist?

I just don’t get Tom Waits.

Well, you have three threads, but I only have one selling point:
“One from the Heart” soundtrack.

My Ex-Husband’s, now defunct (but mind-blowingly talented) band’s name was Bone Machine…he got it from a Tom Waits album.

Sorry about the hijack.
