I have three Windows XP upgrade CDs that I bought retail. I haven’t needed them in a while now, so it’s OK if I sell them on eBay, right?
I mean, I see various Windows CDs on eBay all the time but I just want to make sure that the average person can sell them, and you don’t have to be authorized or something like that, right?
Okay, since you’ve answered your own GQ, I can throw in a bit: you also need to be careful if you used an upgrade license to replace one or more of those XP OSes. I can’t remember the exact case, but I remember seeing someone who tried to sell their earlier versions of a piece of software (by Adobe, I think) after upgrading to a newer version. The courts found against him.
But, otherwise, I’d assume you were okay as long as you relinquished your ownership. Heck, despite the warning, I don’t think too many people would care if you specifically listed that you didn’t have everything that came with it, but could maybe get them on request. The big thing that would cause you trouble is if you don’t give them the Product Key.
And with activation thrown into the mix, I’m not sure the person can use your key, unless Microsoft has a way of letting you deactivate your copy.
I would think in the case you are referring to the person got a ‘full’ copy of the newer version at a discount and kept their ‘full’ copy of the older version. With Windows XP an upgrade CD can’t be used unless you have a full install of a previous version of Windows, so selling an upgrade won’t allow someone without XP to install XP.
If you lose the product key you can find out what it is with a keyfinder, there is no way I am aware of the deactivate or deauthorise Windows but you should be able to re-use the product key a few times before it stops working. I don’t think the CDs would be worth very much to be honest, seeing as it is 2 versions out of date and illegal copies that are fully activated can be so easily obtained.
I’m now using Windows 7. There are two other computers in my house which run Windows XP, but they have their own copy of Windows on them. So in short, the CDs I want to sell are not being used on any of the computers in my house. And I would be selling the CDs with their keys, of course. So I think I’m OK.
You’d be surprised how much people are selling them for. And even at the low end of the price scale, selling three of them will make me fairly good money.
I know. I’ll start the bidding at $1 and see where it goes from there. There’s at least one copy where the biding is up to $30 or so. So I could get that for all three of them, that would be a cool $90 (minus listing and PayPal fees of course).
Actually looking right now, there’s one copy with 18 bids at $61.29. Of course there are others with fewer bids and going for less, but that’s OK, I’ll take my chances.
