“Things to do before I die” such as bungee-jump parachute jump, helicopter ride are all cliches, significant things. Last night I was thinking I must listen to vivaldi’s four seasons on my dad’s mega-expensive (£10,000 according to my brother) music system. This is a not so significant thing. I realized that there probably hundreds of less significant things I would like to do at least once before I kick the bucket.
So I am opening this thread, it’s a free for all for not quite so significant things you’d like to do at least once before you die. I am going to add to my own list as I think of them. feel free to do the same (Keep adding things as you think of them) Maybe we’ll like eachother’s ideas and want to do those things.
Also, don’t worry if it is significant, add it all the same. It can range from sticking your tongue out at a police man to walking on the moon.
Here is my initial list…
Listen to vivaldi’s four seasons on my dad’s mega expensive music system.
Have a go at archery (or take it up fully).
Drive a fast car round a racing circuit.
Baloon ride.
Take a motorboat (under my control) once round the Isle of Man.
Visit London just for the sake of it.
Walk to the top of snaefel[sup]1[/sup] from douglas[sup]2[/sup] and back.
Write a short story.
Write a script for a favourite show.
[sub](1 - highest peak in the Isle of Man, 2 - Capital, where I live)[/sub]
Witness a total eclipse of the sun – check.
See the northern lights – check.
Go to French Polynesia – check.
Learn to fly an airplane – check.
Hot air balloon – check (ride *and * crew).
Hmm. Think I’m done, here. Except for one: do it all again.
No, wait: There are still Polynesian islands I haven’t been to, not to mention all the Caribbean ones. And there’s another good total solar eclipse due in 2 years. Not to mention the hybrid solar next year in the Pacific. And of course I didn’t see a red-tinged aurora, although I did ride in a dog sled.
I better add fjords to the list; haven’t seen those yet.
About a year and a half ago I had a major operation for a serious medical problem, and I promised myself that if I lived there were a few things I was gonna do:
*Graduate from college with my class – check.
*…Without dropping either of my majors or my minor – check.
*Write a screenplay – check.
*Take a sightseeing tour of Bavaria – check.
*Get a job teaching English in Japan – check.
But what do I do now? That’s what I’ve been thinking about recently. Here’s my tentative list:
*I’ve already sung “Bohemian Rhapsody” on three continents, and I’d like to try for a fourth!
*See Iggy Pop in concert.
*Visit Australia. (I guess I could get three in one if I attended an Iggy Pop concert in Australia and sang along as he covered “Bohemian Rhapsody”.)
*Write a second screenplay.
*Sell a screenplay.
*Have a movie review published that I actually get paid for. In money.
*Go to graduate school.
I’ve done a few of the things mentioned by other posters (although not sex with Japanese twins, despite living in Japan), and I can say that visiting London and doing drag are both great fun!
I should write this down, but I’ve got a ton of things I want to do.
See all 50 states by motorcycle. And before anyone says you can’t ride to Hawaii I already know this, I was planning on putting fins on the bike. I’ve already done the lower 48 so I’ve only two to go.
Have sex in all 50 states, hopefully with the same woman.
Climb Devil’s Tower.
Travel through all 360° of longitude. I’ve been from California to Moscow so I don’t have a whole lot to do.
I’d like to learn to fly a bi-plane, but that’s the only kind of plane I want to fly.
Learn to hang glide.
There are way to many places I’d like to see to even start listing, but I want to see the pyramids, the ancient sites of Rome and Greece.
I still have three bands/people I’d like to see live. Golden Earring, who I’m seeing the end of this month! Gary Moore and Mark Knopfler.
Get an article published. (If I die before I get something published after I complete my journalism degree course I’m gonna be pissed. After all the money it’s costing me, I expect to have at least one article to my name.)

[li]Post in one of the “famous doper” threads about myself. :D[/li][li]Marry the girl sitting behind me (she’s not reading this, not that it’s a secret) ;)[/li][li]I’m going out on the road for a few days with the Derek Trucks Band later this year. I don’t just want to do the story I’ve been assigned, I want to write a book about it. A couple of days probably won’t be enough material, so I’ll need to find a publisher or something…[/li][li]Actually, there are a bunch of other stories I’d love to do. One would be a profile of Andre Agassi, interspersed with desriptions of myself playing a set with him.[/li][li]The ‘travel to every state and write about it’ thing has probably been done to death, but ther’s no harm in one more person trying it.[/li][li]Try my hand at standup comedy.[/li][li]Boy, am I setting myself up here![/li][li]A more modest one: survive the last few weeks of college and find a friggin’ job.[/li][/ul]
It’s quite common for citizens of the UK (let alone the isles) to have not visited London. Britain being so densely packed with urban areas probably makes it quite easy to never visit London.
That said. I have been twice, as a kid. But I would like to visit as an adult, under my own steam, so that I can appreciate it more fully.
