A cousin of mine was in prison for 20 years, off and on. Once he got out for good, in his mid-40s, we discovered that a cousin from another branch of the family had deposited $100 a month in his account the entire time. Said cousin was career military, and stationed at various times all over the world, yet never missed. The imprisoned cousin said it had a huge impact as far as his quality of life…

We put money on the books for a guy we know that’s doing five years. $100 every so often makes a huge difference. They have to buy all their essentials, plus he can buy food and smokes. He writes letters often and tells us what he did with the money.

Most jails have a commissary and thus set up a method (for a fee) to have someone fill the prisoners account. It is used for paper, pencils, mailing supplies, an ice cream sandwich, shaving and hygiene products. We kept putting some into my son’s account so he could do the weekly special dinner. A real hamburger with the fixings from a local restaurant was his favorite. His money from working when he got work release also went into that account. When he was released, the balance was applied to his room and board charges. The county facilities around here charge a daily rate to be locked up.
