Sending Plutonium into space

Maybe this should be its own question, but it seems to fit in nicely with this subject, and may be too ludicrous to be posted in general questions, but here goes: In the past. there have been several “conspiracy theorists” (Jello Biafra, I’m looking in your general direction) purporting that every shuttle mission carries an unknown quantity of plutonium. If this were true, than the Columbia disaster would be catastrophic. However, no mention has been made of any severe radioactive hazards. I have seen in the warnings against handling the debris one mention of possible radioactivity, but the emphasis has been on toxicity. Does anyone know whether there may actually be truth in this, or where the whole crackpot theory originated? Thanks in advance for your help.

I started reading this thread only to wonder to myself “hey, didn’t we have a thread like this almost two years ago?”

Then I realised that this is the thread I was thinking about.

ridiculous method of generating power.(You havent even mentioned the special police forces with rights to come into your house without a warrant etc.)50 years of research have proved that we cant get rid of this stuff - the more research we do the surer we are of this.We have better cheaper methods which dont put the human race at risk for the sake of swithching on a lightbulb.
Also, as nuclear power is only really useful for making bombs & as the USA is the only country permitted to actually set any off, why should the rest of the world support nuclear power?
The more you look at it, the crazier it gets.

Would you please explain these special police to me? I have never heard of them. Keeping the waste contained for the 500-1000 years need to get the radioactivity down to the level of the original ores won’t be easy, but it certaintly is doable from an engineering standpoint. Also, can you tell me any other way of producing large amounts of power fairly cheaply without pumping out tons of greenhouse gases, like a coal plant?
Actually, some nations are MORE supportive of nuclear power than the US. France gets 75% of its electricity from nuclear plants compared to about 20% in the US. Plus IIRC France also was the last nation to test a nuke, not the US.
