For some reason, whenever I do a Google search-- SDMB xxxx, on of the links always comes up senegoid.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthreadxxxx
Weird.

Weird.
I am getting that too.
Yes! All your posts now are belong to meeeeeeeee!!!
Bwahahahahahaha!
See this ATMB thread from 5/3/2013:
Note especially Post #2 by Lord Feldon and the link he put there, and Anonymous User’s Post #5.
Then see this ATMB thread of 5/29/2013:
See especially my analysis at Post #6. But note also that TubaDiva at Post #7 doesn’t believe it.
Wow, I am jealous. I wish everyone got mathematics.straightdope.com results instead.
Nonetheless, I still get boards.straightdope.com when I search.
I just did an experiment, in which I discovered something about this.
I’m going to post it in this thread:
ards.straightdope.com and board.straightdope.com where I think it’s most relevant, as may answer TubaDiva’s remark at Post #7.
Watch for it Real Soon Now, probably at Post #8, as soon as I can collect some sample links for evidence and illustration . . .
All Marley did was ban everybody.
Senegold took complete control of the Dope!
Cecil should redo the Secrest society column.
I was always partial to fartypants.straightdope.com
This mystery was explained last July by spinky (a font of information about all things webby and/or farty)
Of course, this means that anything that goes wrong on the SDMB is now YOUR FAULT.
That’s the variation I was talking about! I just wasn’t 100% sure of the name and didn’t want to accuse anyone.
WTF is going on there? I’d just assumed it was one thread that Senegoid linked to a lot, and no one else had, so it showed up with his name. Sure, Google’s spiders may have followed a senegoid link once and gotten trapped, but it should also note that there are very few outside hits.
::tip o’ the hat:: Opportunities to combine my areas of expertise are rare.
Admins: you can fix this problem if you want. The problem is there are an infinite number of URLs that lead to any thread page. All you have to do is include a single HTML tag in the page that helps Google decide what the proper URL for that page is, and they’ll remove all those bogus ones from the search results eventually. The tag would look like this in this thread:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=692994" />
That would be in the page even if someone loads the page by using a url like http://fartypants.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=692994 , so Google will know it’s already indexed that page.
