Separable security and cable TV

I’ve been trying to find some general information about this, but my Google skills are letting me down…

Anyone know anything about separable security as regards to cable TV?

So far I’ve been able to glean that it will require TV set-top cable boxes to have cable card slots, and that the security will be built into the cable card as opposed to the set-top box. Is this right? If so, I have a couple of questons: why? What kind of security are we talking about? Does this benefit the cable company or the customer?

Thanks in advance!

All about cable card slots.

Thanks, FatBaldGuy!

So if I understand correctly (from your link, and from what little I’ve been able to dig up myself), these cable cards with the built in security, will have the same limitations as the current cards? IE: no 2 way communication, etc. Is that right?

The security is for the cable company. It is there to make it harder for people to gain access to the channels that the cable company does not want them to have.
