Separation of bodily elimination acts

Does anybody know how it is that dogs can separate peeing from pooping? I have two pugs. One is very good about going potty (outside) but the other one is rather…inconsistent about it. One thing that kills me is how he can do a #2 but then still have plenty of the yellow stuff inside of him to “water” our carpet with. To my knowledge, when pooping, humans generally pee, as well (unless they’ve emptied their bladder not long before). But dogs (or at least some dogs) seem to be able to separate the two acts. Anybody know how?

I don’t know much about this, but the impression I get is dogs also use their urine for “marking their territory” or some otherwise mysterious purpose.

It’s not often that I’ve sat down in the morning and though “gotta save some of this pee for the smith’s house”, but I think dogs do.

I think you can do it as a human. There is separate wiring and all, they are differing sphincters. You can definitely pee without pooping, I suspect you can poop without peeing if you work at it…

And yeah, the dogs need their pee. They also are outdoor animals, so it’s not like they are thinking “I better empty my bladder before I go back inside since I don’t know when my next bathroom break is”…

They probably don’t really understand that “this place is a pee free zone”.

I imagine there are some people who can poop without peeing. But I imagine it takes some effort (and practice). I don’t think that I can count myself among them. At least not at this point in time.

give me a minute.

nope.

No effort or practice. Only a mildly correlated urge on my part. I was never really aware that was odd.

racepug, you’re young, aren’t you? Probably somewhere in your 20s. I used to think the same as you, but nowadays, there’s almost no connection.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old, I thought that when I defecated, I was “supposed to” urinate first, then continue with defecation.

As I grew up, I realized that I had no basis for that belief, and experimented with releasing both liquid and solid waste at the same time; it was, in fact, possible.

Now that I am much older, I find myself urinating quite frequently, frequently enough that when I need to defecate, there is often no urine to dispose of (although I can usually wait it out and get a tablespoon or so).

Wait! Does the OP mean simultaneously, or in the same “session”?

Or even from the same orifice?

Ok, from context, probably not that. But the title certainly made me wonder.
