After Iraq I find myself indifferent to 9/11.
I was beginning to think it was time to step back from 9/11. Anyone that lived through that day will never forget it. At some point there won’t be large public memorials and remembrances.
But then two people in Boston, full of hate & religious fervor reminded all of us that the threat is still all to real. There are powerful groups out there that want to kill and maim as many Americans as possible. Until that changes, we need to be reminded of 9/11 and what complacency cost this country.
Yeah, but the fear and fervor of remembering 9/11 lead America into a war in Iraq that slaughter many times more innocent civilians than were killed on 9/11. So should those victims never forget?
The two guys in Boston were not part of a “powerful group.” Every country has to deal with crime. The answer is not to treat them as if we are at war and suspend civil rights.
You must have had a rough tour.
Yup, also they at least claimed that their attacks were in response to our attacks, so endless cycle and all that.
A war with another country that had nothing to do with 9/11?
Thanks to OP for cite to original thread.
Brought tears to my eyes.
Affirms SD as community as well.
Zing!
Bumping my thread. I will never forget.
The professional breast-beaters on the 24-hour news cycle won’t let us.
Nor will I.
A number of posts in that old thread report a third plane hitting one of the towers. Does anyone know why folks were saying that? What was the misunderstanding that led people to report that?
Confusing a repeat broadcast of one of the planes hitting for a live broadcast, most likely.
Alternately, ( And I don’t remember the timeline cause I was a bit busy that day ) the reports of the plane that wound up crashing in Shanksville, PA may have entered the timeline and reportage line and been confused with the two impacting the WTC.
Not the crash itself, but the fact that another hijacking was reported, etc. Not sure. This timeline may help.
Pretty sure that’s it. I remember people saying as many as five planes had crashed into the WTC (both on the news and in text messages and such.)
Exactly what does it mean to “never forget 9/11”? Of course we won’t forget. There were a great many innocents died, two iconic structures crumbled to dust. None of us could forget that day. But we have used the memory of that day to justify two needless wars and the killing of innocents abroad a hundredfold of who were lost that day. We’ve used it to justify torture and domestic spying, we’ve used it to stigmatize an entire religion. We have disgraced the memory of those who died by what we have done in their name. Perhaps we should try to forget.
HAPPY 9/11 DAY, EVERYONE! ![]()
I was sick of the coverage thirteen years ago, with its maudlin music and virtually telling us how we’re supposed to feel. Of course we won’t forget. But we should focus on the lessons and not the emotions. People who lost friends and loved ones have every right to mourn; but there comes a point where the rest of us need to move on.
I didn’t lose any relatives or friends (although there were a few close calls), but I will not forgive or forget. I don’t need to watch any of the coverage; it’s too deeply engraved in my brain.
I also remember where I was and what I was doing when the space shuttle blew up, but I don’t run around demanding that everyone remember it. And I saw THAT happen in real time and in person.
I will never understand why our society has to pick open wounds on every anniversary of a bad thing. Nor why every memorial has a goddamn gift shop.
