Serbian premier assassinated

:frowning:

I guess it’ll be a little bit longer before the Balkans will be peaceful again.

I suspect the killings will begin again before June.
:frowning:

That really sucks. But he knew it was coming.

what do you mean, peaceful again?

So many big conflicts have started in the area, I’m starting to wonder, is there maybe a genetic reason for the volatility of that region?

No, elfje, it’s just that so many attrocities have been done to so many people, that no one is willing to ‘forgive & forget’. These things go back hundreds of years and there is no hope for a ‘winner’. So everyone will perpetuate it endlessly. Genetics hath no fury like socialized hatred and prejudices.

The headlines are like deja vue all over again: Serb Assassination Prompts Emergency

Prime Ministers, archdukes, whatever, these folks have been at each others throats for a long time, and will be for who knows how long.

Almost makes me long for the good old days when brutal dictators like Tito kept civil unrest in check by lopping off the heads of opposition group leaders.

Isn’t this how WWI started…the assassination of a Serbian national?

Archduke Ferdinand was Austrian. He was assassinated by a Serbian in Sarajevo in Bosnia. Not quite a straight parallel.

Still though, bad news about the Serbian Prime Minister.

Is it just me or does anyone else find that little map in the middle of the page with the flag for ‘Prime Minister shot here’ kind of surreal? I’m used to mall maps with flags like ‘Santa’s Workshop here’ or ‘Information desk here’. It struck me as really weird and sad.

And don’t forget King Aleksandar of Yugoslavia was assasinated by a member of the Croatian fascist organization, the Utasche, in Marseilles, France back in 1934.

Speaking of, I’m on the mailing list for the Serbian royal family, and I first learned of it when I got my e-mail today and saw the statement from Crown Prince Aleksandar (the grandson of the King mentioned above).

This is scary. :frowning:

Very sad news indeed. I have been trying to educate myself about that part of the world, and now comes this news. I hope for the best, but in my heart I know that the worst is yet to come.
