Serendipity / Love in the Time of Cholera

I was curious as to whether there’s an actual reason for Gabriel García Márquez’ novel, Love in the Time of Cholera, being selected as the book that John Cusack’s character searches for in the romantic flick Serendipity.

Could there be a particular theme or a specific story element in the book that would justify its selection? I refuse to accept that it was chosen at random and bears no relation whatsoever with the events depicted in the movie.

For those curioous about the origin of the word serendipity, this site has an interesting article.

oddly enough there was already a mention of this book in another film with John Cusack “High fidelity”

can’t remember if it was already in the book of the same title
