Does anyone know if SF Gate has published any comments about it?
I just got back. Wow.

I just got back. Wow.
I think they reviewed it once. In the 1960’s. For 20 minutes.
I just got back. Holy crap, what a great movie!
“My muscular buttocks, it’s forty!”
“Dear Buddha, I want a pony and a plastic rocket–”
“I am a feather on the wind. Watch how I soar.”
Non-spoilers:
Kickin’ Reaver ass. Jayne and Mal butting heads. Scary Alliance guy who must have come from the same stock as Jubal Early.
Some people we like…die.
And more.
Excellent, just excellent. I’d go see it again.
I read that while the DVD will contain deleted scenes and plenty of other extra material, Whedon considers the theatrical cut to be the director’s cut, so he won’t be adding any footage back into the movie.
I’ll be seeing it for the second time in about two hours. We saw a free preview about a month ago, but I must support the movie and I’m still excited about seeing again. Whee!

“Serenity” may be a great movie, but this quote certainly doesn’t constitute evidence thereof. It’s kind of like saying “Serenity' is much better than
Battlefield Earth’ or `Gigli’.” :>
Regrettably, Mrs. RickJay is too pregnant to sit in a movie theatre for that long now, and I sure as hell can’t cut myself off from communication for three hours. Damn. Maybe it’ll last long enough for me to see it after the baby’s born.
Dammit man, this movie is good! It’s more important than your damn baby! What the hell kind of wife do you… . Why, I think you should…
stops
gets up, splashes water in his face, drys face with towel, returns to computer
… yeah, uh, I was away for a while. Now I’m back. I think you are making the right choice here. The movie is spectacular, but the baby thing… yeah. I can see that.

Anyone want to recommend a spoiler-free review that I can use as a way of convincing my wife to join me? She doesn’t generally care for SF and never saw Firefly, but if there’s a write-up that makes a strong case for it as a movie, she might consider it…
This is from Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton’s website for their show At the Movies. The review is mildly positive, but it’s their comments below that make the movie sound appealing - they say it’s not your usual blockbuster, it’s edgier and better written. Neither of them had seen the series, but both gave the movie 3.5 stars. Margaret and David are highly respected reviewers here in Oz, although that might not count for much if your wife would prefer to hear from someone familiar to her. Mind you, she could always check their other reviews to see if they’ve got similar tastes to her - they’re pretty eclectic and take a movie on it’s merits rather than just on if it’s “cool” or not.
And apparently there’s lots of reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.
I saw it. Never saw or even *heard * of Firefly, so I had no preconceived notions. I liked it. Good story, nice effects, lots of wit in the script, and most of the crew of the Serenity were actually pretty likeable. That little girl can kick some ass.
The only thing…it *felt * like a TV show. Not sure how to quantify that, but that’s what I think.
Still, definitely worth going to see.
And that alone knocked the movie down from five stars to four in my own rankings. It’s not that he died, it’s how. If he’d died during descent, I would have been okay with it but the suddenness and pointlessness of it just screamed “we’re unpredictable! any thing can happen!” to me.
This article has some quotes from Joss Whedon that make it sound like it might not be quite such a never, ever thing as that:
Good. I approve of this (in general I mean, and not just with regard to Serenity.) Maybe if the studio really screws up your magnum opus that’s one thing, but don’t just hang out three alternate endings so everyone can pick the one they like. Tell us the damned story; not everything should be a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book.
I saw it this evening at 8:35. There was a huge line, and the theater ended up packed. I was totally stoked to see it. Unfortunately, there was probably no way for it to live up to my expectations. Still, it’s possibly the best movie I’ve gone to see all year.
Oboy, finally some decent sf in film!
You all have me excited to go. Maybe a matinee today won’t be too crowded. Thanks for the enthusiasm; it’s contagious.
I [heart] sf. Anyone read Accelerando yet?
