At the end of Serenity, the Firefly arrives to be faced with the Alliance fleet. Suddenly the Reaver fleet appears from the cloud. Was that a shout-out to Return of the Jedi when the rebel fleet hyperspaces in shortly after the Falcon?
It seems a pretty standard dramatic device to me. It needn’t be a reference to anything in particular.
It was supposed to echo the cavalry (or the Indians, take your pick) coming over the hill in old Westerns.
No, it wasn’t a reference to anything other than a bunch of badguys coming into the battle unexpectedly.
Set up a poll and I would choose this option.
Firefly was very much a Have Gun, Will Travel type of western in a Sci-Fi setting. (YMMV)
The enemy of my enemy is my ally.
Took them all of about 90 seconds to go back to being a regular non-ally enemy, though.
Yeah, but by that time, Malcolm had got what he wanted out of their presence.
Mal was secretly a fan of an old vid he borrowed from Wash once. I believe it was called ‘Galaxy Quest’.
No. The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy. No more, no less. Mercenary Maxim 29.
By my count, in that battle alone Mal invoked 2, 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, 16, 17, 27, 29, 30, 31, 35, 36, & 37.
Mal just had to “reprioritize” the Aliiance Fleet’s taret selection criteria in order to scoot through their blockade.
That sounds about right. A nice bit of battlefield confusion.
Is there a complete list somewhere? I hadn’t even realized we’d encountered that many of the maxims already.
Ah, yes, the historical documents.
